History
The town hall was built in the years 1825-1826 to replace an earlier building from the 18th century. The building was erected to the design of architect Bonifacy Witkowski, popular at that time, author of other town halls, among others, in Kutno, Łódź, Łowicz and Rawa Mazowiecka. The construction of a new seat of Sochaczew authorities was related to a town regulation design and a growing significance of the town as part of the Calisia-Mazovia Industrial Region. Sochaczew became an important point along the so-called factory trail. The new, pronounced town hall confirmed the growing repute of the town.
Over years, the building was damaged multiple times. The current shape, albeit similar to the original of the 19th century, was deprived of a portico and a belvedere, which were demolished after damage wrought by the November Uprising. Only the basements with a barrel vault and lunettes have remained from the old building.
In 1973 the building started hosting the Museum of Sochaczew Region and Battlefield of Bzura.
Description
The old town hall is situated on the north frontage of the market square (Kościuszki Square), on the corner of Farna Street. The building was set on a rectangular floor plan, made of brick, plastered and covered with a hip roof with dormers. It has a symmetric, nine-axis front façade. In its middle part, there is a small avant-corps with the main entrance, accentuated by four pilasters in the Ionic Order, crowned with a pediment. The first storey is rusticated, with decorative cornices in the form of arches surmounting the windows and a strip running along the entire façade. Windows on the second storey have surrounds. The whole facade is crowned with a cubic cornice.
The front wall includes four plaques commemorating, among others, a six hundredth anniversary of the town (1968) and soldiers killed in September 1939 (1989).
The largest room in a two-bay interior is a pass-through hall with two columns located on the axis. The rooms include an exhibition concerning the history of Sochaczew and militaria from World War II.
The building is accessible during the opening hours of the Museum.
