A Uniate cemetery tserkva, currently Peter and Paul Apostles Orthodox cemetery tserkva

tserkva Sobiatyno

Address
Sobiatyno

Location
woj. podlaskie, pow. siemiatycki, gm. Milejczyce

Probably the oldest wooden tserkva in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. It represents a type of tserkvas that was popular in the 17th century - a building with a pronounced fragmentation of the body into a presbytery, naves and porch, accentuated by diversified roof shapes.

History

Allegedly, the tserkva dates back to 1672, when it was erected as a cemetery chapel of the Uniate parish in Sasiny. In 1835, the parish in Sasiny and the tserkva in Sobiatyno were incorporated to the St Barbara parish in Milejczyce. From 1839 onwards - an Orthodox church. In 1901, the parish in Sasiny was reactivated, and in the inter-war period, it was incorporated to the Milejczyce parish once again. In the years 1947-1954, the tserkva in Sobiatyno acted as a substitute for the burned temple in Sasiny. Renovations in the 18th and 19th century with a scope that cannot be established. In the years 1960-1963, the interior was subject to renovation. It was partially distorted - among others, shape of the window openings was altered. In 1969, the roofing was replaced and the building was painted on the outside. In the 1990s, the façades were covered with siding and the interior was lined with PVC coating. In 2012, the tserkva underwent a general restoration: replacement of roof sheet with wood shingles, siding with weatherboarding and cupola coverage with an imitation of gold. Currently, the tserkva belongs to Orthodox parish of the Transfiguration of Christ in Sasiny.

Description

The structure is located in the middle of a graveyard and is oriented towards the east. It represents an example of wooden tserkva buildings from the Podlaskie region.

It consists of a nave on a rectangular plan, linked with a three-sided presbytery, and a two-storey porch whose floor plan resembles a square. The nave and presbytery are covered with a six-sloped roof with a roof ridge, while a porch is covered with a tent roof. Both roofs are crowned with onion-like cupola ceilings on gorges. The porch storeys were partitioned by a wide roof with eaves; the upper storey is much lower and narrower than the lower one. The entrance is sheltered by a gable roof resting on pillars.

A wooden structure on a stone foundation; the nave has a log structure (corners with fish tail joints), while the porch has a frame structure. Roofs are lined with wood shingles, while cupolas - with an imitation of gold. Façades are vertically weatherboarded with board and batten siding; nave walls braced with studs. The windows are multi-panel and rectangular in shape. Wooden floors and ceilings.

The monument can be viewed from the outside; it is sporadically opened for worship.
