A valuable example of a masonry Uniate tserkva from the first quarter of the 19th century, designed in the Classicist style.

It possesses both artistic and historical qualities, the former stemming from its façade decorations as well as the Empire-style fixtures and fittings while the latter are related to the fact that this church bore witness to the turbulent religious history of this borderland region, initially serving as a Uniate tserkva and being subsequently taken over by the Orthodox Church and then by the Catholic community.

History

The church was erected in 1825 as a Uniate tserkva of the Transfiguration of Our Lord by the erstwhile owner of the surrounding lands, Ignacy Zawistowski, the marshal of the nobility of the Sokółka district in the years 1815-1818. When the Russian tsar ordered the dissolution of the Uniate Church on the lands incorporated into the Empire in 1839, the local parishioners have managed to resist the forceful conversion to Orthodox Christianity for 11 years. In 1850, the church was finally taken over by the Orthodox community. The existing roof of the tower was replaced with a bulbous cupola. The tower was later destroyed during World War I and although subsequently reconstructed, it has never regained its original height. In 1920, the church was handed over to the Catholic community and served as a rectoral church. In 1946, bishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski formed a separate parish of Divine Providence. After 1945, the roof truss and cladding was replaced, with both the façades and the interior being subjected to renovation works.

Description

The building is located at the southern edge of the village, on the southern side of the road leading towards Sidra, standing on a low hill and surrounded with a stone wall. The church is oriented towards the east. Designed on a rectangular floor plan, it features a narrower chancel terminating with a semi-circular apse. It is a brick structure, with parts of its walls covered with plaster. The foundations are made of brick and stone. The main body of the church is topped with a gable roof, while the chancel with the adjoining apse feature a multi-pitched roof. The front façade follows a three-storey design, with the main entrance positioned on the middle axis, below the gable. The tower, designed on a square floor plan and crowned with a pyramid roof, rises above the vestibule. The entrance is flanked by open porches supported by corner pillars, leading towards the side entrances into the church. The side façades follow a four-axial layout and are partitioned with Tuscan pilasters with decorative panels featuring exposed split stone cladding. The circular and semi-circular windows are adorned with stucco festoons. Inside, the church features Empire-style altarpieces.

The church is open to visitors.
