Description
The Baroque summer garden (Teppichgarten) is located on the axial line of the eastern entrance into the palace. The boundaries of the garden are formed by the gate to the west, an orangery to the north, a curtain wall to the south and a semi-circular wall with two wicket gates and a gazebo to the east, with the latter wall separating the summer garden from the parterre garden where a second orangery can be found. The southern curtain wall is designed to mirror the appearance of the orangery. The wall incorporates a late 16th-century Renaissance portal which was moved here from a tenement house at 1 Market Square in Legnica during the early 20th century. A fountain used to grace the central part of the garden.
The Baroque orangery forms the northern boundary of the summer garden. Designed on an elongated rectangular floor plan, the building features vertical façade divisions in the form of shallow lesenes. The orangery survived World War II without major damage and remained in use during the early postwar period. It was only following its abandonment in the 1960s that disaster came, as the building gradually succumbed to decay. Today, only the peripheral walls remain, reaching up to the level of the cornice; a few pieces of window joinery have also been preserved. The interior, filled with the rotting remains of the collapsed roof truss, is now overgrown with self-sown vegetation. A thick tangle of weeds and shrubs surrounds the decaying structure.
Unrestricted access to the site. Caution is advised due to poor technical condition. The complex is overgrown with wild vegetation; a clear view of how the site originally looked like may only glimpsed during winter, in the absence of snowfall.
