Description
The Baroque summer garden (Teppichgarten) is located on the axial line of the eastern entrance into the palace. The boundaries of the garden are formed by the gate to the west, an orangery to the north, a curtain wall to the south and a semi-circular wall with two wicket gates and a gazebo to the east, with the latter wall separating the summer garden from the parterre garden where a second orangery can be found. The southern curtain wall is designed to mirror the appearance of the orangery. The wall incorporates a late 16th-century Renaissance portal which was moved here from a tenement house at 1 Market Square in Legnica during the early 20th century. A fountain used to grace the central part of the garden.
The visual composition of the summer garden is accentuated by the gazebo (known in German as Favorite), located on the axial line of the eastern path leading towards the palace. The gazebo takes the form of an octagonal pavilion topped with a bulbous roof with dormers. The gazebo originally had a lavishly appointed interior with a marble fireplace surround and balustrade. The church survived World War II without any significant damage but was later ransacked and vandalised. Today, nothing remains of the original fixtures and fittings, with only the brick and stone peripheral walls being left to remind us of how the building originally looked like.
The entire summer garden shows evident signs of the years of neglect. The ruins of the gazebo have been preserved up to the level of the cornice. The interior has been completely destroyed and the roof is conspicuous by its absence.
Unrestricted access to the site. Caution is advised due to poor technical condition. The complex is overgrown with wild vegetation; a clear view of how the site originally looked like may only glimpsed during winter, in the absence of snowfall.
