The church is a perfect example of classic Baroque, inspired by the Jesuit church in Grodno. It was built as a Marian sanctuary (one of the largest in the Voivodeship), operating since the 17th century.

The altar complex is one of the very few examples of the Vilnius Baroque in Poland. The preserved equipment stems from the Dominican period.

History

Built in the years 1759-1783 in place of a 13th century wooden Dominican church as a sanctuary of the Lady of Różanystok. Consecrated in 1785; in the 1980s equipped with, among others, a complex of altar paintings by Antoni Gruszecki. From 1811 onwards, it served as a parish church. In 1846, the Dominican Order monastery was closed and the church fell into the hands of diocesan priests. In the years 1866-1915, it was transformed into an Orthodox tserkva (after 1901, tower cappings were added and the gable was transformed). In 1918, it returned to the Roman-Catholic church; in 1919, it was handed over to the Salesians. In 1988, it was awarded a title of a minor basilica.

Description

The church is located in the middle of the village, within the church cemetery surrounded by a stone wall. It was designed in the Baroque style. A double-tower, three-nave basilica with a transept, has a presbytery capped with a shallow apse. One-storey sacristies are found on both sides of the presbytery. Its towers are of different heights: the western one is lower and its top storey is braced by volutes. The main nave and the transept are covered with a gable roof; side naves and sacristies with a pulpit roof and towers with a tent roof.

The church is made of brick, has a roof lined with sheet metal and metal windows.

Façades are partitioned by pilasters (single, even and doubled) in a small order, with Tuscan capitals and small wings. Mitred entablature, on side façades with incorporated pilaster capitals, interrupted on a transept. Braced by volutes between towers. Window openings are rectangular, with semicircular and segmental arches. The interior is covered with a groin vault with lunettes, resting on arches. A pseudocupola is located on the nave crossing. Of the primary equipment (of 1780s), the following have survived in the church: a complex of eleven altars and a Baroque-Rococo pulpit of the Vilnius type; eighteen altar paintings by Antoni Gruszecki; furniture of ash wood with Dominican symbols (pews, choir stalls, confessionals). On the side altar, there is a miraculous painting of Lady of Różanystok of 1929 by Jan Sawczyk, painted upon commission of the Salesians after the 17th-century Mother of God painting had been taken by Orthodox nuns away to Russia.

The historic building is accessible all year long.
