Różanystok

Location
woj. podlaskie, pow. sokólski, gm. Dąbrowa Białostocka - obszar wiejski

One of the few Dominican monasteries in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, with a body inspired by Baroque palaces and with modest architectural decor, characteristic for Late Baroque.

History

The construction of the monastery was completed in 1794. In 1846, after the dissolution of the Order, the building became property of the parish. In the years 1901-1915, it belonged to an Orthodox nunnery. At that time, it was subject to renovation (the building’s roof was lowered, ceramic lining was replaced with tin, and windows, floors and furnaces were replaced) and, at the same time, the gateway in the building adjacent to the monastery was walled up. The monastery was transformed into flats for nuns; a school and a boarding school for girls functioned there until 1902. In the years 1919-1954, the building belonged to the Salesians and served educational purposes. In the years 1954-2000, it was a state property, and until 1990, it functioned as a dorm for boys of the Agricultural School. Later, it was out of use. In 2000, it was returned to the Salesians, who established a pilgrims’ guest house inside.

Description

The monastery is located in the centre of the village, east of the parish church, with the front facing the north. It was built in the Late Baroque style.

A two-storey building, on an elongated rectangular floor plan, with a central avant-corps on the façade and two extreme avant-corpses on the rear façade. In the east, it is linked to a lower building, formerly a gate building. Gable roofs above the main corpus, gate building and front avant-corps; three-sloped roofs above avant-corpses in the rear façade.

The church is a brick building, has a roof covered with tin and wooden windows; plasterwork inside and outside. Its facade is partitioned by a narrow string course and crowned with entablature. The second storey includes a cornice resting on pilasters without bases, with capitals incorporated into entablature. A crowning cornice on the rear and side façades; a string course on the west façade. On the gate building’s façades, analogical pilasters in the giant order are found.

A single-bay, corridor interior layout in the main corpus; two-bay, enfilade layout in extreme avant-corpses and the gate building. Corridors and rooms on the first storey of the main corpus are covered by cloister vaults.

The site may be visited upon prior arrangement with the owner.
