A castle of the type often seen on lowland territories. An example of a late-medieval magnate’s castle. Today, the building is in a state of ruin.

History

The castle was most likely erected at the request of Nickel von Zedlitz the Younger during the 1460s, when its owner, having disposed of his estate in Gościszów, settled in the area for good. Yet it was shortly thereafter - in the year 1500 - that the castle lost its residential function when the village was sold to the Lwówek Śląski town council along with the grange and the castle. The castle is believed to have sustained damage during the Thirty Years’ War, although it was rebuilt some time thereafter. It was finally abandoned in the 18th century, whereupon its inexorable slide towards ruin has begun.

Description

The lowland castle was designed on a rectangular floor plan, its dimensions being 22.5-23.5 x 26.5 metres. The peripheral walls which formed the said rectangle were made of sandstone ashlar blocks bound with lime mortar, the thickness of the walls being between 1.7 and 2.6 metres, the latter measurement being taken in the north-western corner. It was here that a residential building designed on a roughly square floor plan had stood; this building is now believed to have been a keep with interior walls and window reveals lined with wooden logs. A kitchen was originally located in the north-eastern corner, as evidenced by a stone outflow gully. Between the two structures there was a gateway in the curtain wall, about 2.5 metres in height when calculated from the current level of the courtyard. The gate was most likely preceded by a bridge. Various utility buildings had originally stood alongside the south-eastern and south-western walls, as evidenced by the niches in the peripheral wall that had once accommodated the ends of ceiling beams; some fragments of inner partition walls have also survived. The complex is surrounded with a double moat separated by a rampart which has since been partially levelled. The outer moat is barely visible in the surrounding terrain, while the northern section of the inner moat has been filled with earth. The ruins of the castle consist of the peripheral walls, surviving almost intact up to the level of a few metres, as well as remnants of the interior partition walls. The interior of the castle is littered with rubble and overgrown with self-sown vegetation, which makes its original layout hard to decipher.

The site is open to the public.
