An interesting example of Late Gothic/Renaissance sacred architecture in the region of Kuyavia and its transformations in later periods.

History

The brick church was constructed in the years 1597-1612, in the place of an older wooden church mentioned in written sources back in the years 1325-1327. The brick church was funded by Hieronim Rozdrażewski, Bishop of Kuyavia. The church was consecrated in 1627 by Bishop Baltazar Miaskowski. The building underwent restoration works in 1839. The western porch was added in 1924. During World War II, the church in Raciążek was devastated and plundered (it was then that the side altarpiece from the 14th century went missing). The building was renovated in the years 1947-1948.

Description

The main structure of the church is in the Late Gothic style, but it underwent major alteration during the Renaissance and the early modern period. The building is oriented towards the east and has a single nave with a tower to the west and a chancel terminating in a semi-circular apse to the east, to which a sacristy was added to the north. The chancel has a two-bay layout while the main nave has a four-bay layout, and both were covered with barrel vaults with lunettes (with arches in the nave) during the alteration works in 1924 The tower was designed on a roughly square floor plan, covered with plaster and features blind windows; it is partitioned with cornices into six uneven storeys and topped with a bulbous Baroque cupola. The tower and the main body are reinforced with buttresses.

The fixtures and fittings mainly date back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The main altarpiece in the Renaissance style from the 16th century, funded by Bishop Gembicki, features a painting from 1592 depicting the Crucifixion scene, with a visible figure of the benefactor – Bishop Rozdrażewski. The Mannerist choir stalls from 1630 (renovated in 1865) have painted decorations, which were created by Adam Miaskowski in 1830. The side altarpieces were designed in the Baroque and Rococo styles. The rood beam features Baroque sculptural decorations. The Rococo pulpit was funded in 1766 by residents of Raciążek. The wall paintings from 1928 were created by Ewelina de Cortenei.

Currently, there is a small parish museum displaying moveable artefacts: sculptures, liturgical vestments, old prints, etc. on the premises of the church (above the sacristy).

The site is accessible to visitors.
