The Palace in Polska Cerekiew was built by Georg von Oppersdorff in the early 17th century, and from around the mid-17th century it became one of the seats of the von Gaschin family, whose property also included Żyrowa, Turawa, Kietrz, Olesno, Kożuchów, Woźniki, and Bażanowice.

History

The Palace in Polska Cerekiew was built by Friedrich von Oppersdorff in 1617 on the site formerly occupied by a Gothic knightly seat/ It has retained its late Renaissance character until the end of the 19th century, when it was completely renovated and altered by Eberhard Matuschka.

In 1945, it was burned down and from that time to the beginning of the 21st century it remained unused. Since around 2010 the building has undergone research, conservation, and construction works aimed at restoring its original appearance. In 2014, the first stage of construction work was completed.

Description

The Palace was built in the centre of the village right next to the road from Reńska Wieś to Racibórz. It is located in the park which originally was a landscape park from the east and south. It was surrounded by a moat, the outline of which has survived to this day.

To the east of the palace there is a pond, to the west there are: a gatehouse with a tower and corner fortified towers, and a parish church.

The palace was built on a rectangular floor plan with a longer side on the east-west axis. Originally, it was a three-winged building with a curtain wall extending between two corners, octagonal towers (to the west) and inner courtyard. In the 18th century, the palace was covered with a mansard roof, and the courtyard was converted into an imposing central hall.

The three-storey wings of the palace have basements underneath and retained Gothic bricks, which had remained probably after the former seat. The towers are one storey higher than the main body. They are covered with reconstructed cupolas.

The northern and southern façades are seven-axial with an irregular arrangement of window openings. The front façade is five-axial (1:3:1) with a decorative portal on the axis, while the eastern façade, preceded by a newer terrace and stairs, is six-axial; the façades are topped with a crowning cornice, above which, except for the northern façade, there are triangular gables divided by cornices and pilasters (reconstructed). The façades also feature preserved fragments of the original sgraffito decoration from around 1617.

During the last construction works, the barrel vault with lunettes was partially reconstructed, but most of the rooms were covered with modern ceilings. The original layout of rooms has also undergone changes involving, for example, removing staircases in the towers and installing the main staircase, located in the southern wing, around the lift shaft.

The monument is open to visitors.
