The earthwork in Podnieśno is an example of a lowland ring fort.As a remnant of early medieval fortifications, it is a valuable archaeological find.

Location and description

The ring fort is located at the western end of the village of Podnieśno. It is surrounded by waterlogged meadows in the valley of the Sosna river. The ring fort has an oval shape with dimensions of around 180 x 200 m. The rampart was lowered while extracting earth for the construction of a road and facilitating access to the area of the ring fort. The rampart was utterly destroyed in the western part of the site, along the Sosna river. A mill located in the north-western part of the site has survived to the present day. The maidan, which is the inner part of the ring fort, is now a flat wetland, used periodically as a meadow or arable land. The rampart is partly overgrown. Once the ring fort was completely surrounded by water, today visitors can see a partly preserved moat.

History

The ring fort dates back to the 11th century.

Condition and results of archaeological research

The ring fort in Podnieśno was known as early as the 1930s. Inventory research and verifications of the ring fort were conducted by the Department of the Polish Historical Atlas (Zakład Polskiego Atlasu Historycznego) in 1957. Surveys under the supervision of Wojciech Szymański were carried out in 1965. In 1983, the ring fort was registered during the surface surveys carried out within the framework of the “Archaeological Picture of Poland” project.

Excavations were opened in the section near the rampart and on the maidan. An investigation of the cross-section of the rampart revealed the remains of wooden structures, i.e., logs arranged longitudinally and transversely to the line of fortifications, and stone pavement on the inside. Further archaeological investigations of the cultural layer on the maidan, which is a layer of soil dating back to the period of use of the fortified settlement in the past, uncovered fragments of pottery from the 11th century and animal bones.

The ring fort is located in the area of land being private property. It is visible from the road running from Podnieśno to the village of Sosna-Korabie and from an unpaved road on the eastern side of the site.
