Hillfort

hillfort early Middle Ages Podgórzyce

Address
Podgórzyce

Location
woj. lubuskie, pow. zielonogórski, gm. Nowogród Bobrzański - obszar wiejski

The hillfort belongs to well-preserved facilities coming from the early Middle Ages, with traces of a castle originating from the second half of the 13th century/14th century.

Location and description

The hillfort is located approx. 1 km to the north-west from the centre of the village, on the edge of the

proglacial stream valley of the Bóbr river. The area is wooded and administered by the National Forest Holding.

The hillfort in Podgórzyce is characterised by the main body in the form of a mound set on an oval floor plan, with dimensions in the upper plane of around 20 x 30 m and the height of up to 3 m in its eastern part. The northern part includes a double moat and two ramparts. The internal moat measures 10 metres in width, while the rampart on the internal side - up to 13 metres in width and around 1-1.5 metres in height. As regards the other moat and rampart, their width does not exceed 8 metres. This part of the hillfort is intersected by a causeway, most probably being a remnant of an old entrance. A layer of anthropogenic deposits of moderate thickness as well as relics of a wall made of pebbles have been found under the inner yard’s turf.

History

The hillfort in Podgórzyce was established in the early Middle Ages and functioned between the mid-10th century and the mid-13th century (D-E phases according to W. Hensel). According to Dominik Nowakowski, a castle of a transitional type existed in that place in the second half of the 13th century/14th century. An unspecified number of fractions of late-medieval ceramic pottery, including of a steel-grey colour, as well as several fragments of hooves and most probably a crude sickle originate from that place.

Progress and findings of archaeological fieldwork activities

The hillfort was penetrated during the surface surveys in the interwar period and after World War II (1984, 2007). In 1994 a probing survey was caried out. Acquisition of materials faced difficulties as the hillfort was overgrown with grass. The early studies determined that the chronology of the site began in the early Middle Ages, whereas Dominik Nowakowski situates here a castle of the transitional type from the second half of the 13th century/14th century, which should not exclude the existence of an earlier defensive complex.

The hillfort is accessible all year round. There is a possibility of accessing the hillfort by a forest path from Podgórzyce.
