One of the few examples of a well-preserved complex of wooden sacred architecture, including a church from 1793, a belfry from 1844 and the remnants of the former burial cemetery with two stone tombstones.

It is one of numerous wooden and towerless churches that used to be commonly erected across the Lublin region.

Historia

Płonka first appears in historical records in 1359. It is mentioned there as a royal village. The Latin parish was probably founded in 1422 under the German law. The then existing church was replaced by the present-day one, which was erected between 1793 and 1798. Restored in 1844 (a belfry was also built then), 1873, 1882 (thoroughly), as well as in 1907, 1926 (external formwork), 1960s (shingle roofing replaced with sheet metal), 1990 (internal paneling). The interiors of the church are currently undergoing another renovation.

Description

The church complex is situated at the village centre, near the manor house (the manor house was demolished in 1973). In the former burial cemetery surrounding the church, there is a belfry, two tombstones and specimens of old trees. Church with an oriented structure. Built on a floor plan consisting of a rectangular nave and a narrower and lower chancel closed on three sides. On the sides of the chancel, there is a rectangular sacristy and a treasury. At the front, there is a small square church porch. The church is made of timber, with a corner-notched log structure, reinforced by formwork, set on a newer brick foundation. The nave and the much lower church porch are covered with gable roofs, with half-gables from the west. Over the chancel, there is a gable, three-span roof. Over the sacristy and the treasury, there are two-span roofs with sheet metal cladding (originally shingled). On the roof ridge of the nave, there is an octagonal, slender ridge turret with a lantern.

The roof truss is wooden, with a double roof load bearing structure. All elevations are reinforced with vertical planks with board and batten cladding, with a well defined plinth and a profiled crowning cornice. Rectangular, multi-section windows are surmounted by window surrounds. The walls are painted with cream-colored oil paint, which contrasts with darker colours of architectural details and of the window and door woodwork. Inside, the nave and the chancel are covered with a flat ceiling – in the nave supported by four pillars. In the western part, there is a choir gallery based on two pillars. Between the nave and the chancel, there is a wide, semi-circular chancel opening and a profiled beam with a crucifix on it. Most furnishings date to the 18th century (probably transfered from pre-existing churches), however, there are also neo-Baroque altars (19th century) with older ornaments and paintings.

A free-standing bell tower, erected on a square floor plan, single-storey. It has wooden, pole structure reinforced vertically with planks and board and batten cladding, topped with a pavilion roof covered with sheet metal. On the roof, there is a modern cross (previously a Classicist pinnacle in the form of an obelisk). The top parts of the two-storey elevations comprise pairs of semi-circular soundholes. At the church cemetery (former burial cemetery), there are two preserved Classicist, stone gravestones: Tomasz Wasiutyński (died in 1798) and Bogumiła Dydyńska née Piegłowska (died in 1821).

The heritage site is accessible from outside and inside upon prior arrangement.
