Address
Pietrzyków, 46

Location
woj. dolnośląskie, pow. świdnicki, gm. Dobromierz

An old tower mill which instantly defines the surrounding landscape.

History

  • late 18th c. - construction
  • early 20th century - abandoned, converted into a guest house
  • 1980s - adaptation for residential purposes

Description

The village of Pietrzyków is located about 1 kilometre south of the road leading from Wrocław to Lubawka (DK 5). The windmill rises on a hill, towering above the village.

It is a typical tower mill with an immoveable brick tower topped with a rotating cap. The interior structure as well as the primary mechanical components: the cap, the cails, the brake wheel and the transmission - were all made of wood. The roof above the rotating cap is clad with wood shingles.

During the early 20th century, the windmill was deprived of all its interior mechanisms and converted into a small guest house for tourists; since then, the building has remained abandoned for some time. During the second half of the 20th century the windmill was adapted to serve as an ordinary house. Today, the structure remains disused, although it has been secured against firther damage. The windmill towers above the picturesque landscape of Wałbrzych Highlands, its location making it an ideal observation point.

The building may be viewed from the outside; the interiors are inaccessible.
