History

The palace in Patrykozy was built in the years 1832-1843 for Teodor Lubicz-Szydłowski, a general of the Polish Army during the November Uprising. The construction was based on the design by Franciszek Jaszczoł. After the death of Teodor Lubicz-Szydłowski in 1863 the property along with the palace was taken over by his nephew Antoni. In 1871 Antoni Szydłowski sold it to Rajmund Skarżyński. In the early 20th century the palace was taken over by Hipolit Cichocki and later inherited by his son Stanisław. In 1930, after the partitioning of the property, the palace and the park were taken over by Rev. Solnicki. Following World War II, the property was taken over by the state. Around 1987 part of the land was bought by a farmer J. Wiąsek. In the mid 1990s - 2/3 of the property belonged to the state and 1/3 to a man named Gessler, who took over ownership of the park and the palace by purchasing the Wiąsek’s part. Around 2000 the palace received a new owner. During the renovation that lasted over 6 years (2004-2010), the current owner, Maurycy Zając, recovered a detailed arrangement of the palace and restored its historical appearance. Damaged wall and ceiling stuccowork, traceries, tile ovens and fireplaces, panelled parquets and marble floors returned to their original place in a renovated form, reflecting the old atmosphere of the palace. This appearance is complemented by original palace fittings and Biedermeier furniture that seamlessly merge with the interior of this extraordinary feature. The owner’s care for bringing back the palace’s splendour enchants every visitor. Visitors can marvel at a romantic park in the English style as well as ponds with a palace tract and two bridges located around the palace.

Description

The palace, situated among the fields, south-east of the village, on a local elevation, is surrounded by fields on three sides and remnants of the landscape park on the western side. Access is possible from the east and west. In the east, the complex is available through a long ramp resting on basements with barrel vaults. Its front faces the north-east. The ramp in front of the palace forms a spacious porte-cochère, which makes the main entrance being situated on the first floor. The palace is made of brick, plastered, resting on a circle section plan and with an irregular body. The southern component part is convex, while the northern component part is concave with the main entrance along the axis. A two-storey part erected on a square plan adjoins the main corpus in the east. a three-storey, quadrangular tower with oblique corners abuts on the building in the west. a one-storey, round fortified tower adjoins the corpus in the south. The palace’s appeal was not only evoked by its diverse plan and body, but also by the façade decor composed by means of such elements as: gables and half-gables with pinnacles, lesenes with panels terminating in trefoil arches, window openings terminating in sharp arches or ogee arches and a pointed roof covering the round fortified tower. The façade contains a two-storey gallery in the south. It is glazed on the tall ground floor level, therefore it functioned as an orangery. on the upper floor it was opening into a row of pointed-arch windows. Window openings were equipped with tracery decorations. The interior was composed in the Classicist and Gothic Revival style. Gothic Revival fireplaces and residues of stuccowork have survived: among others, ceiling rosettes and cornices. The decor of a round room on the tall ground floor of the round fortified tower was composed by means of thin columns, blind traceries and stalactite vault. Moreover, cast iron, winding staircase in the tower along with window and door woodwork has survived. The entire decor was composed in the Gothic Revival style.

For a small fee and after arrangement with an owner, the palace is open to visitors
