History
The perimeter of municipal fortifications of Pasłęk was erected in the first half of the 14th century, in the place of a wooden palisade. In the 17th century, brick fortifications were strengthened with external earthen bastions. Around the 18th century, due to the development of fire arms, municipal walls lost their importance and started to be dismantled, often considered an easily accessible source of building material. In that way, ca. in 1830, Brama Garncarska and upper sections of Brama Młyńska were dismantled. Fortified half-towers fitted into the municipal fortifications were conducive, in the 18th and the 19th century, to build residential premises on the walls, part of which survived up to this day.
Description
The line of walls outlines an irregular polygon. The main outline of Pasłęk fortifications was closed with three gates: Garncarska, Kamienna and Młyńska, two of which survived until today. The upper, face section of municipal fortifications were made of brick featuring monk bond, while the foundations — of commonly accessible granite stones. The municipal walls are connected in the north-eastern corner of the town with defensive walls of a castle, forming a single fortified system.
Substantial part of the municipal fortifications is discernible today and fitted into the contemporary urban space. Green areas with passageways situated on the external part of the fortifications make the structure generally accessible.
