Hillfort - Zabytek.pl

Address
Owczary

Location
woj. lubuskie, pow. słubicki, gm. Górzyca

The hillfort belongs to interesting facilities coming from the first stages of the early Middle Ages, with traces of trenches from World War II.

Location and description

The hillfort is situated on the edge of a high terrace of the Odra river valley, in the area partially overgrown with a forest and partially covered with wastelands and meadows, approx. 500 m to the south of the village, at a road to Pamięcin and Słubice.

The highland-type hillfort with dimensions of approx. 200 x 100 m has a shape of an elongated cone and is open at the east end. Originally it was probably concave, but now its shapes are blurred.

History

The hillfort in Owczary was built in the early Middle Ages and functioned most likely from the 9th century to the mid-10th century. Due to the fact that the site has not been subject to excavation works, neither its structure nor more precise dates are known. Its origins were determined on the basis of materials acquired during surface surveys.

Progress and findings of archaeological fieldwork activities

The hillfort was penetrated in 1956 and 1957 during surface surveys in the course of which multiple fragments of clay pottery, rounded at the top, including a fraction of a poorly profiled edges, were collected. Some ceramic artefacts are ornamented. Moreover, a bone burin, clomps of pugging material and animal bones were found. In 1994, in the course of the “Archaeological Picture of Poland” project, 5 fragments of early medieval pottery were encountered.

The hillfort is accessible all year round. Access is facilitated by a road running close to the site.
