The palace in Niewodniki is an example of residential architecture combining features of French Baroque and Renaissance Revival.

History

The first recorded mention of the village of Niewodniki dates back to the 13th century. In 1407, duke Bolko IV donated the estate to brothers Henryk and Merbot von Haugwitz Over the next centuries, the estate changed hands on many occasions. Its owners included, among others: chancellor of the duchy of Opole and Racibórz Jerzy Nawowa and doctor of philosophy Gustaw Mayet. In 1870, Niewolniki became property of Julius Wichelhaus. Owing to the efforts of the latter, a palace and a manor farm and park complex were built in 1872. The estate remained in the hands of the Wichelhaus family until the end of World War II. After 1945, it was nationalised and handed over to a State Agricultural Holding (PGR). Over the next years, it was used as a recreational centre and a cultural centre. In 1996, the residence was renovated by new owners - Piastpol company - and adapted for hotel purposes.

Description

The palace-park-manor farm complex is located in the north-eastern part of Niewodniki. Its residential section, within which the palace is built, is surrounded by a park and neighbours on the north a manor farm yard.

The two-storey palace building has basements underneath and is made of stone and brick. It was built on a rectangular floor plan with small avant-corps on the sides and topped with a high mansard roof with dormers on the axis. In the middle of the seven-axial front façade, there is a single-storey portico opening outside with three semi-circular arcades and topped with a terrace with a balustrade. The southern façade also has seven axes. By the eastern façade, a wooden, glazed, large veranda was added. The façades feature lavish architectural décor. They are articulated horizontally (stone plinth, cornices separating storeys and crowing cornices, strips, rustication) and vertically (pilasters, pediments, dormers). On the axes of the façades, there are rectangular window openings in surrounds. Window openings of the central section of the front façade, on the ground floor level and in dormers, have semi-circular top sections. The original interior layout was modified and adapted for the present hotel and restaurant functions.

The building is accessible to visitors.
