The gate-belfry, designed in the Classicist style, constitutes a valuable example of early 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture.

Its appearance was modelled after that of the church itself; together with the church, it forms a valuable, picturesque complex of ecclesiastical buildings. Following a comprehensive restoration conducted in the years 1997-2001, the ecclesiastical complex in Niemirów, comprising the church, the gate-belfry and the perimeter wall, received the 2003 “Well-Preserved Monument” prize, awarded by the General Monuments Inspector.

History

The gate-belfry was erected in 1823 at the initiative of the erstwhile parish priest, reverend Marcin Niemyjski, who remained responsible for the administration of the parish in Niemirów from the year 1800 onwards. A comprehensive restoration of the structure was carried out in 1999, with new plaster finish being applied and new roof tiles being laid, accompanied by the repainting of the structure.

Description

The gate-belfry forms an integral part of the perimeter wall which surrounds the church cemetery stretching around the parish church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Niemirów. The gate-belfry is positioned on the axis of the front façade of the church, in the northern frontage of the market square. The structure was designed on an elongated rectangular floor plan. Its main body consists of two distinct sections: the lower sections, designed as an upright rectangle, and the upper part, taking the form of a horizontally positioned rectangle incorporated into a triangular gable and topped with a pediment, likewise triangular in shape. Lower side annexes linked to the perimeter wall adjoin both sides of the gatehouse. The main body is covered with a gable roof, with the side sections featuring shed roofs instead. The building is made of brick, its walls covered with plaster. It features a central gateway topped with a semi-circular arch as well as two similarly disposed bell openings on the second storey; another, slightly smaller arched opening pierces the wall of the gable just below the triangular pediment. The walls are adorned with pilasters, with low pillars and slanting eaves of the side annexes flanking the main structure. A stone with a foundational inscription is embedded in the wall above the entrance. A number of 18th-century bells are suspended inside the belfry.

The site is open to visitors.
