It is a dominant feature in a relatively insignificantly transformed landscape.
Location and description
The ring fort which is referred to by the local inhabitants as the ‘Trench’ (pol. ‘Okop’) is located about 1.5 km to the south-west of the centre of the village. It is situated on the south-western end of a small raised area of land, shaped as a wedge into the waterlogged and peaty valley of the Miłotka stream.
The ring fort in Nidzgora measures around 50 metres by 42 metres. It is surrounded by a single rampart which is up to 3 metres in height. It is located in the area of meadows and arable land; waterlogged areas have survived in the southern and western part of the site.
History
Researchers date the ring fort to the Early Middle Ages, and more specifically to the period between the 6th and 8th century.
Condition and results of archaeological research
First verifications of the ring fort were carried out by Roman Jakimowicz in 1926. Twenty-one years later an inventory of the site was drawn up; Łucja Okulicz conducted surveys in 1966; and on-site excavations were carried out under the supervision of Jerzy Gąssowski between 1971 and 1972.
The rampart of the ring fort and a part of the maidan were excavated. Researchers found that the rampart have a shape of a high earthwork, topped with a complementary structure in the form of starlings, i.e., wooden boxes made of thick laths. The excavations of the maidan have uncovered a stone hearth and the remains of dwellings. Excavations of the site beneath one of them have unearthed the skeleton of a pregnant woman who died probably shortly before confinement. An investigation of residential buildings revealed fragments of pottery, a large quantity of animal bones and lumps of pugging.
The ring fort is located in the area of land being private property, approx. 250 m to the east of the road from Nidzgora to the south, near a forest.
