Address
Murów

Location
woj. opolskie, pow. opolski, gm. Murów

The hill fort is a remnant of a mediaeval settlement. It is a significant component of the cultural landscape.

Its good state of preservation allows to read the original shape of the complex.

Location and description

The hill fort is located about 1,300 m north-east of the centre of the village of Murów, at the edge of a forest, on the southern bank of the Budkowiczanka river. In the vicinity there is a built-up area (the so-called "Kopiec") to which Polna Street running from Murów towards the north-east leads.

The conical hill fort is surrounded by a well-preserved moat measuring about 6 m in width, filled with stagnant water. The defensive rampart measuring approx. 6-7 m in width at the base is partially levelled. On the north-east and south-west sides, the rampart is doubled, which was an additional safeguard of the gate that was formerly at the place of break in the ramparts. The hill fort is built on an oval plan, and the cone on a quadrilateral plan with rounded corners. Steep slopes of the tall (about 6 m) cone descend towards the moat. Its upper surface is flat, partly damaged by excavation, probably during World War 2. At present, the site is overgrown with trees and shrubs and nearby there is an unpaved road.

History

The hill fort in Murów is a Slavic fortress built around the 13th century, i.e., at the end of the Early Middle Ages. It was heavily used until around the 14th century.

Condition and results of archaeological research

The hill fort was described by M. Hellmich in the interwar period. In 1958, verification and exploratory surveys were conducted by Józef Kaźmierczyk and Klemens Macewicz. In a small survey excavation, they found dozens of fragments of pottery, tiles, burned pugging, animal bones, and brick fragments. The cultural layer, which is a layer of soil formed during the functioning of the fortified settlement, measured about 80 cm in depth, which indicates a quite long and intensive use.

The site is open to visitors. It is located in an area managed by the State Forests, near an unpaved road leading through a forest from the hamlet of Kopiec to Zagwiździe.
