Parish church of St Stanislaus

church Milejczyce

Address
Milejczyce, Kościelna 1

Location
woj. podlaskie, pow. siemiatycki, gm. Milejczyce

One of the few surviving wooden churches in the Podlaskie province, dating back to the first half of the 18th century and featuring valuable fixtures and fittings designed in the Baroque style.

The architecture and interior layout of the church in Milejczyce is clearly reminiscent of the brick and stone churches of the Baroque period - specifically the towerless variant thereof.

History

The first wooden church in Milejczyce was founded by king Sigismund the Old in 1529. The subsequent, wooden church was destroyed during an attack of the Swedish and Cossack forces in 1657. In the year 1660, a new church was erected on the ashes of the previous structure. The existing wooden church was erected in the years 1740-1744. It was subsequently renovated in the years 1782, 1829 and 1856. During the period of persecution which followed in the wake of the failed January Uprising, the church was closed down, with both the building and the surrounding land being entrusted to the Orthodox Church. Later on, in 1866, the church was converted into the tserkva of the Holy Spirit. The church was then reclaimed by the Catholics in 1917, with the parish being re-established in 1921. Major repairs and renovations were conducted in 1925, 1942, 1955 and 1969.

Description

The building is located in the north-western part of the village, 125 metres east of the provincial road no. 693, on the northern side of Kościelna street. The church, oriented towards the east, was erected on a rectangular floor plan, its rectangular chancel narrower and shorter than the nave. The western section of the chancel appears embedded in the main body of the church, forming a tight cluster along with the sacristy and treasury annexes which flank it. The roof above the main body and the chancel are of the gable type, with shed roofs used for the sacristy and treasury annexes. A quadrangular steeple topped with an octagonal cupola rises above the roof ridge. The church is a wooden log structure reinforced with vertical supports, its walls covered with weatherboards. The entire structure rests on a stone foundation, its roofs clad with wood shingles, with the exception of the steeple, which features sheet metal cladding instead. The façades feature a profiled cornice running beneath the eaves, with the triangular gables of the front façade and the chancel being separated from the gable walls below by skirt roofs. The main entrance in the front façade is preceded by a small porch, its gable rooflet supported by wooden posts. The single-nave interior features a flat ceiling, while the chancel section is graced by a false barrel vault. In the west part of the nave, there is a wooden organ gallery supported by a pair of pillars. The interior fixtures and fittings include valuable Baroque altarpieces.

The site is open to visitors.
