A representative example of a small-town half-timbered house once common in Western Pomerania and the former New March (Neumark) region.

The house, constructed using the traditional timber framing technique, retains its original architectural form as well as parts of the period fixtures and fittings.

History

The house is believed to have been constructed during the first half of the 19th century, as evidenced by the type of timber framing and roof truss used. No information is available about its builders or original owners; before 1945, the plot of land on which the house now stands had the status of agricultural land and was used as the site of a blacksmith’s workshop. Today, the building remains under the administration of the municipal authorities and is used as council housing. The building underwent various ad-hoc renovation works, allowing both the original design and detailing of its façades to be preserved intact.

Description

The house is located in the western part of the old town, forming part of a tightly clustered northern frontage of Jana Pawła II street - one of the main streets of the town of Mieszkowice. The tenement house does not possess any architectural detailing indicative of a specific architectural style, with the aesthetic value of its façade dictated purely by the distinctive arrangement of its timber framing as well as some surviving period pieces of window and door joinery. The house was built on a rectangular floor plan and measures 12.3 by 10.5 m; its front façade faces the south-east. The house has two entrances in total. It was designed as a two-storey building with a basement underneath parts of its structure; it is covered with a tall gable roof which shares its ridge with the neighbouring house no. 21. The walls of the house feature a half-timbered structure with both clay (wattle-and-daub) and brick infills, their surface covered with plaster. The walls of the basement are made of field stone and ceramic brick. Inside, the house features wooden beamed ceilings with a smooth clay finish. The basement level features barrel vaults as well as wooden ceilings with exposed beams. The rafter and collar roof truss rests upon a double queen-post structure, with the individual timbers forming part of the truss exhibiting significant differences in terms of finish and origin. The roof is clad with beaver-tail roof tiles forming a fish scale-like pattern.

The front façade retains its original, five-axial layout with a rhythmic arrangement of door and window openings, accentuated by the distinctive pattern formed by the structural timber frame as well as the period wooden door. The rear façade has been covered with roofing felt in recent times, its doors and windows being of modern manufacture. The interior retains its original layout, with a cobbled passage leading alongside the southern gable wall as well as the two-bay arrangement of walk-through rooms in the residential section of the house. The front entrance features a double door with geometric panels and surviving original metal fittings, including the zoomorphic door handles.

The building can be viewed from the outside. Residential property (private apartments).
