Address
Mierzynówka

Location

This masonry wayside shrine, designed in the Baroque style, remains one of the oldest and best-preserved structures of this type in the Podlasie region.

Inside, the shrine features a copy of the Baroque sculpture depicting St John of Nepomuk.

History

The wayside shrine in Mierzynówka was most likely erected towards the end of the 18th century. Neither the actual builders of the shrine nor the individual who provided the necessary funds have been identified. In 2011, the Grodzisk commune conducted a comprehensive restoration of the shrine, with the access path leading towards the structure being paved with cobblestones. It was also at that point that a copy of the 18th-century sculpture of St John of Nepomuk was created, replacing the original which was relocated to the parish church in Grodzisk and subjected to a meticulous restoration.

Description

The shrine is located alongside the road from Grodzisk towards Czarna Cerkiewna, on the southern side thereof, its front facing north. The structure is quadrangular in shape, with a pronounced plinth; it is covered with a gable rooflet. It is made of brick, its walls covered with plaster; the rooflet is clad with roof tiles. Up front, the shrine features a deep recess, while the eastern and western walls are pierced with small, segment-headed windows. The corners of the shrine are rounded and chamfered. The front façade is topped with a small, iron cross positioned atop the roof ridge. Inside, the shrine houses a replica of the sculpture of St John of Nepomuk, originating from the mid-18th century.

The site is open to visitors.
