The hill fort in Miejsce is a relic of the local medieval watchtower located in the valley of the Stobrawa river, among waterlogged meadows.

Location and description

The hill fort is located in a wide valley between the Stobrawa river and its former Stara Stobrawa river channel, about 400 m north-west of the Pokój-Świerczów-Namysłów road.

The hill fort was founded on a small dune hill located among the then waterlogged meadows, adapted to defence needs. It overlooks the surrounding area. The fort is oval in outline, measures about 70 m by 80 m, and is characterised by a clearly formed spherical cone measuring about 40 m by 50 m and 2-3 m in height. It is surrounded by a moat, the width of which ranges from around 10 m in the southern part to 5-6 m in the western part. The rampart measures about 8-10 m in width and about 1-1.5 m in height. Only in the northern part, the moat disappeared because of the road running there through fields and meadows. To the west, the outer edge of the moat adjoins an earthen structure which is lower than the cone, has a crescent shape, and is surrounded by a moat. The hill fort has a total area of about 50 acres, and the usable residential part covers an area of about 5 acres.

History

The hill fort was subject to a surface examination and inventoried, among others, by M. Hellmich in the interwar period. The exploratory survey conducted in 1960 by J. Kaźmierczyk and K. Macewicz, and in 1969 Z. Bagniewski. They found several hundred fragments of rounded and turned vessels, animal bones, lumps of pugging, nails, bolt and other iron items. A survey made in the rampart uncovered the face of the fortifications built of stone. At a depth of 140 cm under the stones, researchers discovered a trace of the beam which could have been a remnant of the wooden and earth structure of the fortifications of the settlement. The thickness of the cultural layer in the inner yard is about 30 cm. The structure has been preserved in good condition. A contour plan of the hill fort was drawn up in 1993.

The hill fort in Miejsce was probably a defensive structure. Perhaps it was a permanent watchtower on the route leading from Opole to the north through Pokój, Namysłów, through the areas that were almost completely forested. At present, the structure is a refuge for animals.

The fort is situated in an area managed by the State Forests. It can be accessed via an unpaved road, about 400 m east of the road from Opole to Namysłów, near the Stobrawa river, on the edge of the Stobrawa Cultural Park.
