Location

A representative example of a small-town timber-framed tenement house forming part of a market square frontage - a typical feature of the architecture of Western Pomerania.

The building has retained its original architectural form and façade design, providing an added value to the town’s historical landscape.

History

The house was most likely erected during the first half of the 19th century. There is no information about its builders or original owners, although it is suspected that the building may have once been the property of the local parish. In the early 20th century, the rear wall of the building underwent alteration works; a shop was opened on the ground floor, while the original wooden doors and windows were replaced; in addition, the façades of the house were now covered with plaster, with profiled surrounds framing the window and door openings. After the year 1945, the gable wall (southern wall) was also modified, while all the façades underwent restoration. Today, the tenement house serves as a multi-family residential building.

Description

The tenement house is located in the centre of the old town, in the north-eastern corner of Freedom Square (Plac Wolności), on the northern side of the church. It is a free-standing, side-gabled building, its roof ridge positioned parallel to the market square. The tenement house does not possess any architectural detailing indicative of a specific architectural style, with the aesthetic value of its façade dictated purely by the distinctive arrangement of its timber frame. The building was erected on a rectangular floor plan (18.6 x 10 m), with the entrances positioned on its longer sides; the downstairs shop features a separate entrance leading through the truncated northern corner. The building is compact in shape, its two-storey body covered with a half-hip roof. The house features half-timbered peripheral walls with brick infills, their outer surface covered with plaster; the original arrangement of posts and beams is replicated in the form of a painted faux timber framing on plaster. Two of the building’s walls - the rear wall and the southern wall - are made of ceramic brick, their surface covered with plaster and painted white. Inside, the building features wooden beamed ceilings; the counter-ceilings beneath are covered with plaster on reed backing. The rafter and collar roof truss rests upon a double queen-post structure, with the individual timbers forming part of the truss exhibiting significant differences in terms of finish. The roof is clad with overlapping cement roof tiles. The façades of the house retain their original layout and appearance, with some of the early 20th-century door and window joinery also being preserved. The front façade follows an eight-axial layout, accentuated by the painted imitation of the timber-framed structure beneath as well as by the profiled plaster window and door surrounds. The gable-end façades both follow a three-axial layout and feature a trapezium-shaped top section. The interior follows a two-bay layout, with the hallway in the western part of the building running from one side of the house to the other. The eastern section of the building is occupied by a ground-floor store. The current layout of the house reflects its interior arrangement during the early 20th century.

The building can be viewed from the outside. Municipal/private property.
