The castle, erected in the 15th century, redesigned in the 16th, 18th and early 20th century, contains relics of a defensive building that formed a part of the town’s defensive system in the Middle Ages.

History of the structure

The castle in Lubsko originates from the Middle Ages. The tower base and fragments of external walls most probably date back to that era. It is possible that a Gothic building was erected in place of a knights’ hillfort, although it has never been confirmed. The earliest mention of the castle, from a document dated 1588, concerns its purchase by the von Kottwitz family, owners of the residence and the town until the mid- 18th century. Most probably, in the late 16th century, the Kottwitz family erected the northern part of the castle and the gatehouse with a passage, thus creating a residence in the spirit of the Silesian Renaissance. During another redevelopment carried out in 1739 by Friedrich Sigismund von Bredow, the building obtained a Baroque form and a park was created. An octagonal lantern crowning the tower, modified at that time, has survived to this day. The castle underwent the most radical alterations in the 19th and 20th century. As a result of construction works carried out in that period, its stylistic features were almost completely erased. After World War II the castle served as a hospital for Russian troops; later, in the years 1951-1955, as an orphanage; and after the comprehensive refurbishment carried out in the mid 1950s, as a nursing home.

Site description

The castle is situated on a gentle elevation in the north-west part of the old city. The main entrance leads through the gatehouse on the east side. To the west, there is a landscape park circumscribed by branches of the Lubsza river. A stone-and-brick building was designed on an L-shaped floor plan with its front façade facing the east. A partitioned, asymmetrical body is formed by: two two-storey wings covered with three-pitched roofs, a three-storey tower with a hip roof featuring an openwork balustrade, plus a tall north tower topped with a dome with a lantern. Contemporary annexes were added at the west end. The front façade was diversified by the use of arcades terminating in a full arch, crowned with a triangular gable. A preserved escutcheon is visible above the entrance in the east wall of the lower tower. The north part of the building features relics of medieval walls (tower base and fragments of external walls).

Visitor access. Limited access to the historic building.
