An example of a manor complex forming an urban layout of the town, presenting high architectural and urban-planning values.

History

The manor complex of the so-called starost manor in Leżajsk was established in the years 1760-1770 at the initiative of Józef Potocki, the district governor (starost) of Leżajsk. The manor house and outbuildings were erected partially on the 17th-century basements of the previous residence, existing in this place from the mid- 16th century. The manor complex consists of a manor house and four outbuildings remained property of the Potocki family until 1932, when it was bought by the town with the intention to serve as a state gymnasium. To this end, it was partially altered. The complex performed its educational function until the early 21th century, when it underwent a full-scale renovation in the years 2006-2007 and has since functioned as a museum.

Description

The manor complex is situated in the centre of Leżajsk, close to the market square and a parish church complex, on the eastern edge of the town escarpment.

The manor house’s floor plan reflects the layout of clock arms showing 11 o’clock. Outbuildings frame its front in pairs, therefore, the arrangement has preserved the features of Baroque architecture.

The Classicist manor house was erected on a rectangular floor plan and features corner extensions on the sides. Its one-storey, cuboidal body with a basement is covered with a mansard roof and is diversified at the front by an attic with a gable roof and a preceding terrace resting atop four pillars as well as small dormers that flank the terrace. An attic and two dormers are also found on the eastern side. The building was made of brick and the roof was clad with ceramic tiles.

The symmetric front façade has thirteen axes and features an attic decorated by four pilasters and a terrace resting on four Tuscan pilasters as well as extreme axes separated by Tuscan pilasters.

The rear façade is symmetric in the main corpus and features irregularities on corner extensions. Side façades are irregularly arranged.

The entire body is circumscribed by a string course.

The interior was designed in a two-bay arrangement, with a hall and a vestibule positioned along the axis.

Four outbuildings: north-eastern, north-western, south-eastern and south-western, are small, one-storey buildings (except for the south-western outbuilding, which has a basement under parts thereof), made of brick on a rectangular floor plan, with cuboidal bodies covered with hip roofs clad with ceramic roof tiles. Rhythmic arrangement of façades was obtained by application of pillars braced on top by a crowning cornice.

The buildings and the park are accessible. They are used as a conference centre with a hotel.
