The hill fort in Lewiczyn is an example of a very well-preserved conical motte that is characteristic of the archaeological landscape of Mazovia.

Location and description

The hill fort, known locally as the ‘Mound’, is located about 400 m to the west of the church in Lewiczyn. It is situated on the edge of a forest, on the right bank of the Kraska river, on a hill on the verge of a valley.

The hill fort has the shape of a conical mound, surrounded by a moat and an outer rampart. The area of the maidan, i.e., the usable inner part of the hill fort, is located approx. 4 m above the bottom of the moat, the crown of the rampart around one metre higher. The entire structure is around 80 m in diameter. The whole area of the site is overgrown with a forest.

History

The hill fort dates back to the Early Middle Ages (11th-12th c.)

Condition and results of archaeological research

The hill fort in Lewiczyn was known as early as the beginning of the 20th century. An inventory and verification of the hill fort were carried out in 1951. Survey excavations were conducted by Ludmiła Paderewska in 1968. In 1991, the site was registered during the surface surveys carried out within the framework of the “Archaeological Picture of Poland” project.

In 1968, two excavations were opened in the central part of the site. The excavations uncovered a settlement layer, which is a layer of soil dating back to the functioning of the fortified settlement. An investigation of the layer revealed few fragments of pottery, an iron knife and animal bones. In addition, the survey of the area of the rampart that projects into a slope unearthed the remains of a cultural layer probably linked to the settlements from the period preceding the establishment of the fortified settlement, containing fragments of ceramic vessels from the period of Roman influence (1st-4th c. AD), among others.

The hill fort is located within the area owned by State Forests, on the edge of a forest, about 350 m from the road running from the centre of the village to the north.
