The temple is located in Spiš.

History

The first information about a parish in Łapsze Wyżne goes back to around 1655, when the Spiš region recatholicised. According to the records from a canonical visit of Bishop Zsigray in 1700, a wooden Uniate church had already existed in the village before. The parish was overseen by the lords of the nearby Niedzica castle. The first known parish priest was Krzysztof Rolzeński (from 1698). At that time, the family of Giovanelli de Toluano was the holders of the Łapsze estate. The then wooden temple featured three altars dedicated to Sts Peter and Paul, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and St Nicholas. The construction of the present church started in 1759 on the initiative of the contemporary parish priest Szymon Gorylewicz (or Gorlelewicz) from nearby Kacwin. The founder of the church was Jan Giovanelli de Toluano, the last of the family holding the Dunajec region between 1683 and 1776 (according to the foundation inscription preserved in the main altar). The construction and interior decoration were completed in 1776. In the 1960s, the shingle roof was replaced with metal sheet. A major renovation took place between 2001 and 2005.

Description

The church is located in the west part of the village, on a high terrace, sloping south towards the Łapszański creek. The temple is known in Spiš as a real gem of the Rococo style. The church is oriented, the outer walls embraced by massive buttresses. The temple is a single-nave, three-span structure with a single-span, narrower chancel closed with an apse. The church body is on a rectangular plan. To the north of the chancel, there is a rectangular sacristy and to the south a square porch. A tower on a square plan adjoins the church from the front (west). It has a vestibule in the ground level. The tower is covered with a high cupola. The church body roofs are gable with separate ridges. The temple is made of stone and plastered. The roofs are covered with metal sheet. The roof truss is wooden and has a rafter and queen post layout. The interior is in a uniform Rococo style from the years 1760-1776. The main altar reveals a painting of the church patrons Saints Peter and Paul. The pulpit boasts rich woodcarving decorations. There is a stone baptismal font with a wooden cover in a Baroque and folk style. The church is surrounded by a stone, plastered fence. From the east and west, it has two gates, each flanked by cylindrical posts. The gate in the north part of the fence has a large, arcaded passage with a segmental arch at the top. It is crowned with a tympanum with a cross and pinnacles to the sides. A small building of the former morgue is blended in the fence. In the church graveyard, there are several graves of parish priests and church patrons.

The church is accessible all year round.
