The church in Księte constitutes an example of wooden sacred architecture in the Dobrzyń Land.

It is located along tourist trails and is one of the few in the voivodeship to retain its original shape.

History

The church in Księte was mentioned in 1520 and said to have been funded by Mikołaj Romocki, the owner of the village. The current building was erected in the 18th century and then renovated in 1865 and 1903; as part of one of the renovations, it was extended to the west. In recent years, construction and conservation work was performed in the church; it consisted in replacement of the roof cladding (it was previously covered with wood shingles) and renovation of the church façade.

Description

The village of Księte is located approx. 3 km north-east of Świedziebnia, on the Pissa river and by Lake Księte. The church is situated on a small hill in the eastern part of the village; the area around the church is surrounded with a stone wall and in its vicinity, there is a preserved monument (stone tree stump) to the Romocki family – former benefactors of the church.

The church is an aisleless building oriented towards the east, erected on the plan of an elongated rectangle, with a separate chancel inside. A rectangular sacristy adjoins the main body from the north. The nave and the chancel are covered with a gable roof, with the gable on the eastern side and the extended side section of the roof covering the sacristy. The tower, which juts from the western part of the body, has walls clad with weatherboards with pairs of windows from the north and the south and is covered with a bulbous cupola with a lantern, topped with a wrought iron cross with a weathercock.

The church is a wooden structure with a log structure on a stone foundation and its external walls are clad with weatherboards. The façades are topped with a profiled cornice, with segment-headed windows.

Inside the church, the choir gallery is supported by two columns, which also support the structure of the tower which has merged with the body after extension of the church. Above the choir gallery, the ceiling is reinforced with braces. The walls are partitioned by vertical supports in the shape of Doric engaged columns holding up a profiled crowning cornice.

Noteworthy fixtures and fittings include the Baroque main altarpiece from the 18th century, which features a painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Częstochowa from the 18th century in the middle section, a painting of St Michael the Archangel from the 18th/19th century on the sliding panel and a painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary with Child from the 19th century in the top section; the Baroque side altarpieces from the 18th century, of which the right features a painting of Stigmatisation of St Francis as well as a painting of Mary Magdalene in the top section while the left features a painting of St Anthony with Child and a painting Blessed Virgin Mary of Częstochowa in the top section. There is also a Baroque pulpit from the 18th century. The pipe organ from 1865 features an inscription referring to renovation of the church in that year. Other elements of the décor include folk procession floats from 1828. There are also several sculptures: a Gothic sculpture of a bishop saint from the first half of the 16th century, a Baroque sculpture of the Risen Christ from the 18th century, a sculpture of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Skępe from the 19th/20th century, a folk crucifix from the 19th century.

The church can only be viewed from the outside, with the interiors being open to visitors during service.
