Administration building, evidencing the history and political transformations in this part of Cracow.

Until the 20th century Podgórze had been developing as a thriving and independent urban centre, only then it merged, albeit reluctantly, with Cracow. The town hall of Podgórze is a token of the past, a memorial of a non-existent town which, at the time of the merger, was more advanced and wealthier than Cracow.

History

The first Baroque and classical buildings in Podgórze, along with the Office and the Customs Chamber, were deployed sparsely along the old routes. For the first town hall of Podgórze, the House under Black Eagle, existing before 1784, was adapted. Soon thereafter, the office was moved to the address 14 Rynek Podgórski, a building erected in the early 19th century, to replace one standing here before. The so-called Old Town Hall was transformed, in approx. 1851, as a result of conversion, into a manor house-inn “Under White Eagle”. A new building, worthy to house the town hall, was built in the years 1844-1854. In order to adapt it to the growing needs, it was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century. After the merger of Cracow and Podgórze, in 1915, the Town Hall lost its original function. Another major renovation and adaptation were carried out only after 1993.

Description

The eastern frontage of the Market Square, with the building of the new town hall, was built in 1840s and 1850s. The new town hall is located in its northern corner. Plots by the market are quite regular and similar to squares in shape. In order to carry out regulations works, the owner of the plot constituting the eastern section of the current market square was expropriated, and the existing buildings removed. The town hall is a brick building, with lavishly decorated front façade. It was extended in a couple of successive stages taking place in short time intervals. In 1892, the building was extended upwards and its lower section was renovated. As far as the style is concerned, features of historicism with neo-Baroque elements are mostly visible in the building. The pompous form was considered elegant and dignified. The sumptuous and architectural décor from the 2nd half of the 19th century has been preserved. In the top section of the front façade, from the Square Market, there is a surviving coat of arms of the city of Podgórze (replaced in 1950s by the inscription “PZPR” - the acronym of the Polish United Workers' Party, then by the national emblem. The original inscription was restored in 1996), granted in 1808 (two columns associated with the pillars of Hercules with which the ancient hero was supposed to delimit the boundaries of the world, and a nude bearded man with a stick or paddle next to them). In the interior, elements of the original fittings are still present, including original furnishing of the assembly hall of the Town Council of Podgórze.

The building houses the Architecture Department of the Municipal Office of Cracow. It can be accessed in the working hours, with restrictions and only to some parts of the building. The building is often shown during various local events.
