Wosińska townhouse

tenement house 2nd half of the 14th c. Kraków

Address
Kraków, Rynek Główny 37

Location
woj. małopolskie, pow. Kraków, gm. Kraków

A house with a modest façade, outshone by other more representative buildings, its final shaped attributable to the joining of two previously separate buildings.

History

Brick buildings were erected in this location after the mid-14th century. They belonged to the Pacak and Schilling families. Extended vertically in the 15th century, they were merged and rebuilt at the turn of the 16th century into a Renaissance house. The investors were the Schilling family arriving from Alsace. At that time, the back and side annexes were added, the latter raised by the second floor in the third quarter of the 17th century. The property was connected to ul. Sławkowska, which is why the complex was L-shaped. The new structure did not alter the function of the buildings. The residential function was maintained in the subsequent centuries, too. In 1564 the building was purchased by the magistrate Andrzej Fogelweder. The later owners were representatives of bourgeois families, for example, Sztamet, Mazurkiewicz and Wosiński (hence the contemporary name of the building). In 1661 the goldsmith Stanisław Gothard resided with the Wosiński family. In the 17th century, the building belonged to the Pestalozzis and Luccinis (hence the alternative name of the building). In 1746 the house was taken over by Karol and Regina Tucci (Tuszek), the owners of house no. 38. The late 18th century saw major renovation and retrofitting works, when the house was in the hands of King Stanisław August’s architect, Józef Le Brun. In 1842 the building was put up for auction and bought by the Żeleński family. In 1887 the roof was re-designed at the request of Count Kryspin Żeleński (design by Rajmund Meus); also, the annexes were reconstructed after they had fallen in ruin at the end of the 18th century. The vestibule was adapted after 1900. Another renovation in 1928 was overseen by Tadeusz Stryjeński and Franciszek Mączyński. Further works were carried out in the years 1938-1939, 1953 and 1969-1971 (major renovation). Today, the building houses the Medical Professional Cooperative. In 2013 the façade was renewed under the conservator’s supervision.

Description

A four-level, three-axis house with a modest façade following the principles of simplicity and geometric order, including thanks to the symmetrical arrangement of the windows and their uniform dimensions. The use of sculpted decorative elements in the central axis place focus on the central part of the façade. The yard features charming wooden porches with sophisticated forms.

The site is partly available: freely from the outside but inside only during the working hours of the stores and institutions.
