History

The building is one of the oldest in Podgórze. it was a manor house-inn (guest house) near the Cracow-Austrian border. Also the neighbouring buildings served the same purpose.In the end of the 18th century and in the early 19th century, brick buildings appeared slowly; they were mainly located by the “Imperial” route and on the northern side of the Square Market. The first Baroque and classical buildings in Podgórze, with the Office and the Customs Chamber, sparsely deployed along the old routes, delimited the shoots of the following present streets: Staromostowa, Brodzińskiego, Józefińskiej, and Piwna. In February 1846, during the Cracow Uprising, President of the Senate Jan Schindler fled from Cracow together with the Austrian army. He stayed at the inn “Pod Jeleniami” where, according to testimony of J. Chłopicki, he burned the manuscript of his memoirs. Chłopicki lived at that time at the inn, not willing to engage in the events of the Cracow Uprising. Also officers of the intervening Austrian troops stayed at the inn. In 1829, fire in the inns “Pod Jeleniem” and “Pod Czarnym Orłem” destroyed 10 houses “towards the bridge on Vistula”. In the renovated and converted tenement house, also concertos were held in the 19th century. As part of public space modernisation activities, in the 1930s, in front of the house “Pod Jeleniami”, a fuel station and a taxi stand were created. During the Nazi occupation, the house was located on the Ghetto side.

Description

The building is made of brick. It was erected in the end of the 18th century, in the late-Baroque style. It was converted after the fire in 1862 and before 1889. Originally it had two storeys, a dormer window, and a säteri roof. In 1924, the stepped roof with the dormer window was replaced by an upward extension in the form of the second floor, which gave a clunky cuboidal shape to the building. At the corner of the 1st floor, there is a distinctive relief of a deer (or two deers with a common head with antlers). The interior has undergone alterations. The ground floor houses service premises (bank, notary office, etc.). In 2014 the relief, one of the symbols of the city district, was renovated from social contributions.

Private building, not accessible for visitors. Only premises at the ground floor level can be accessed in the opening hours of the bank and offices.
