The feature presents historical and artistic values. The complex was erected in the 18th century to the design of Francesco Placidi for the king Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski; reconstructed in the 19th century by Francois Arveuf, constitutes a symmetric, uni-axial urban arrangement linking the residence and park with the church and urban development.

History

From the early 14th century to the end of the 1st Republic, the village belonged to Polish kings. Władysław IV Jagiełło built a hunting manor here due to the proximity of forests abundant in wild animals. The first brick residence in the Late Baroque style was erected in Kozienice in the years 1778-1791 to the design of architect Francesco Placidi, commissioned by the king Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski. From 1782 onwards the works at the palace were supervised by Jan Cantius Fontana, who markedly influenced the shape of the garden through introducing more freedom to the Baroque geometric layout. The complex was altered in the years 1839-1865 for general Ivan Dehn, who received this estate from the Tsar as an award for successful suppression of the November Uprising. Kozienice remained in the hands of the Dehn family until 1914. The furthest-reaching alteration of the palace took place in the years 1896-1900. An architect Francois Arveuf, brought to work exclusively in the complex, endowed the buildings with the French Renaissance style. In the inter-war period the feature became a seat of public institutions, among others, a starosty and a gymnasium. Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, already in 1939, the complex was burned by the Germans. Only the left outbuilding survived. An administrative building for poviat authorities was built in place of the palace. In the 1990s the complex was complemented with a right outbuilding.

Description

Currently, the new buildings only refer to the former palace and park complex. The complex consists of buildings currently performing office and administrative functions. They include: a preserved left outbuilding with a tower and a contemporarily built palace and right outbuilding. The whole complex was planned along the main axis, leading from the entrance gate through an access alley, a fountain to the palace and further stretching across the park as its main alley.

The preserved left outbuilding has features of the French Renaissance. They can be traced, among others, by looking at a strongly partitioned corpus of the building and at façade decorations, such as numerous avant-corps, rusticated lesenes, window and door surrounds and dormers.

In front of the palace, on the eastern side of the entrance gate, there is one of the oldest secular monuments, erected in 1518. It was created as a memorial of birth of the future Polish king, Sigismund I, in Kozienice. In the yard, directly in the front of the palace, there is an elliptical pool made of Szydłowiec sandstone, surrounded by columns-lamp posts.

A landscape park, currently a municipal park, is located behind the palace, on a slope lowering towards the Zagożdżanka river. Out of the historic, regular complex, lateral hornbeam alleys surrounding the clearing on the central axis of the complex have survived. In the south-eastern part of the park there is a small graveyard with gravestones of the Dehn family (inscribed to the register of monuments by means of a separate entry). Currently, the park has been enriched by wooden sculptures created by local artists.

The site is accesible to visitors.
