A valuable example of wooden sacred construction from the mid-18th century with Baroque furnishings.

It is one of the attractions of the Wooden Architecture Trail. It is one of the two wooden churches in the Włoszczowa district.

History

The first mention of the church in Kossów dates back to around 1470. At that time it was the church of All Saints. Before 1556, the church was converted into a Calvinist church. It was restored to its original function in 1602. Perhaps it was also restored and rebuilt at that time. In the middle of the 17th century, a new church was erected on the foundations of the Gothic church, funded by Jakub Michałowski, which probably burned down around the middle of the 18th century. The current temple was founded in the years 1764-66 by the owner of Kossów, Józefa Michałowska née Wielopolska, wife of Antoni. Perhaps the foundation was not connected to the building of a new church, but rebuilding the old one. The church was consecrated by the suffragan bishop of Krakow Fr Franciszek Potkański on 20 May 1766. The belfry was probably also erected at that time. The appearance of the building has not changed much since 1823. Only the “small tower”, mentioned in the description of the church, is missing. In the second half of the 19th century, the church was in poor condition. In the 1870s and 1880s, the heavily damaged building was saved from demolition by renovating the roof (in 1877) and replacing the wall base. The chancel and side altar were renovated in 1886. In 1937, a renovation was carried out and the paintings in the main nave were made. In 1958, the church and belfry were renovated. In 1968, the church became the church of Our Lady of Częstochowa. In 1987, the walls of the church and belfry were impregnated. In the years 2010-2012, under the “Skarbiec Świętokrzyski. Szlak architektury drewnianej i średniowiecznej” [Skarbiec Świętokrzyski. Wooden and medieval architecture trail] project, the main altar, two side altars, the pulpit and the baptismal font underwent conservation, and the polychromes in the main nave and chancel were restored.

Description

The church is situated in the central part of the village, north of the road to Oksa. It was built in a log structure on a brick foundation with limestone mortar. The walls are reinforced with vertical supports and covered with vertical boards, the joints are cover by panels. The southern wall is decorated with the instruments of the Passion of Christ hanging from the outside. The nave has a shape similar to a square, the chancel is rectangular, closed on three sides. To the west there is a square porch, to the south a vestibule. From the north, a rectangular sacristy with a vestibule on the west side adjoins the chancel. The main entrance leads from the south through the vestibule, the second from the west through the porch. The church is covered with a gable, shingled roof, with planes broken over the nave and extended over the upper side logs, on a king post truss and one roof ridge over the nave and the chancel. Under the eaves of the extended planes of the main roof along the nave and under the eaves of the chancel there are brackets, which do not have a structural function, but are a decorative element. The porch and vestibule are covered with a gable roof, the sacristy with a shed roof. The steeple has a bulbous shape with a lantern with a bulbous roof topped with a spire on a sphere.

The interior is decorated with paintings from the beginning of the 19th century, imitating architectural forms: pilasters with fluted shafts and composite capitals, adorned with a dentilled frieze. The ceilings are flat with a ceiling lining, with upper side logs in the nave. The panels on the ceiling form a geometric pattern. The musical choir dating from the 1st half of the 19th century is supported by two ornamental profiled pillars. The rood arch has the shape of a full arch. On the rood arch there hangs a figure of the crucified Christ from the 16th century or the first half of the 17th century. The chancel’s doorframes were cut in the upper part in the shape of the so-called “ogee”. Window frames were made in a similar way. The main altar which dates back to the 2nd half of the 17th century was probably moved from another church. The left side altar probably dates back to mid-17th century, and the right one to the 18th century, similarly to the pulpit. In the church there is also a wooden baptismal font probably from the 17th or 18th century.

The belfry is built in a post-and-frame structure on a square floor plan. It is covered with a steep, tented roof with shingles. It is a single-storey, single-span, building without a basement with walls slightly sloping inwards, covered with vertical weatherboards. The joining points are covered with panels. Inside there are two bells: the smaller one from 1921 and the larger one from 1759.

The building is accessible from outside, access to the interior upon consent of the parish priest.
