Hillfort - Zabytek.pl

Address
Korfantów

Location
woj. opolskie, pow. nyski, gm. Korfantów - miasto

The hillfort makes up the presumed remains of a mediaeval defensive facility. It is a valuable component of the local cultural landscape, yet exposed to the destructive activity of people and nature.

History

The studies conducted so far have help locate the site but did not permit its in-depth examination. The absence of archaeological material may suggest an old age of the site; the only uncovered items have been relatively modern: glass and debris. Without excavation, it is not possible to determine the history and probable function of the settlement.

Location and description

The site is located about 300 m south of the village boundary, about 100 meters west of the road from Korfantów to Rączki, and about 200 meters east of the riverbed of the Ścinawa Niemodlińska River. More precisely, the settlement sits on the west side of Kościószki Street leading out of Korfantów towards the south-west, between two ponds; it is on the south side of Krótka Street leading to farm no. 1, inside an arable field.

This small conical hillfort is a lifted hill (ca. 40 cm above the surrounding land) largely levelled by human intervention. The cone is encircled by a partially damaged moat, well visible from the south and north-west side.

Condition and results of archaeological research

The fort was incorrectly localized at the early stage of examination, which resulted in its involuntary destruction. The surface examination by, among others, Georg Raschke in 1939 was unsuccessful. Only the investigation by Z. Bagniewski carried out on the “presumed mediaeval fort” allowed its provisional evaluation. Based on the excavation at the edge of the mound, the site was dated to the 19th century and its lower layers reveal modern times glass and brick rubble. The site was identified as a moated mound in a palace park. A verification study was conducted by Krzysztof Spychała in 1985.

Access to the site is limited - it is located on private and used arable land.
