The palace is an interesting example of the residential architecture of the second half of the 19th century in the then Kielce Governorate, with a form reminiscent of villa and manor house architecture.

History

The palace was built on the site (and possibly basements) of the former canonist’s house, on the expropriated land of the Głęboczek canonry. Such canonries were established within the organisation of the collegiate chapter in Kielce, within the present Castle Hill. The new structure was assigned to the inspector of the Government Junior High School; the construction began in 1969 and after some construction problems it was completed in 1886. The design scheme and archives indicate that the structure was designed by Franciszek Ksawery Kowalski — the then builder of the Kielce Governorate. It is also probable that the structure underwent construction corrections in the early 20th century. The outbuilding adjacent to the palace to the south may have been (based on its design scheme) erected simultaneously with the main building. One of the headmasters of the junior high school was Woronkow mention by Stefan Żeromski in the memories under the title “Wybieg instynktu”. During World War 1, the building was used as a shelter for legionnaires for some time, and in the interwar period it was used by the Prosecutor’s Office. In 1952, the building was occupied by the Polish Radio, initially as a branch office, which was converted into a regional broadcasting station in the late 1950s. In 1975, the structure started to be used by WIFON, and in 1997 it was taken over together with all of the company’s assets by TUiR WARTA S.A. and continues to be used by that company to this day. In the meantime, the structure underwent maintenance, renovation and repairs, including complete renovation combined with the adaptation and partial conversion of the interior (according to a design by architect Włodzimierz Pedrycz) for the needs of the new owner right after the war and in 1998-2000.

Description

The structure is situated on the southern slope of the Castle Hill — now the centre of Kielce. It is located in a fenced area adjacent to a municipal part. The site is occupied by three buildings: two of historical importance, i.e., the concerned palace slightly further back from a street (villa of a junior high school headmaster) and the outbuilding adjacent to a street, and a low modern auxiliary building deep within the plot. The palace consists of one storey with a loft which is currently not used, and has a basement underneath some of its sections; it is a compact structure built on a nearly square floor plan, partitioned by means of avant-corps, annexes and terraces. The interior layout is clear and simple, based on three bays — clearly discernible to this day despite a number of modifications; however, the historical components of the décor have not been preserved. The façades are designed in the Historicism style from the turn of the centuries — cornices, opening surrounds, pilasters with capitals, shaped in the Classicism style; the terraces feature decorative cast iron balustrade made by local manufacturers and characteristic of the local development of that period. The whole structure is carefully arranged and attractive in appearance. The substance of the building includes masonry walls mostly made of stone, brick arched ceilings and Klein ceilings, and wooden roof truss. The walls are fully plastered and painted; and the roof is clad with flat galvanized sheet metal. During the last full-scale renovation and adaptation, plasters were replaced, new damp insulations, joinery was replaced, and the interior was completely modernised.

The structure is clearly visible from the outside; the backyard and the palace are open to the public during the business hours of the insurance company.
