Townhouse

residential building Kielce

Address
Kielce, Henryka Sienkiewicza 2

Location
woj. świętokrzyskie, pow. Kielce, gm. Kielce

A typical example of a small townhouse in Kielce from the turn of the 19th/20th century, with architectural design of the façade and typical contemporary interior design.

History

The building was erected in 1909 and probably designed by Józef Gidlewski, owner of the structure. Before World War 2, the townhouse was purchased by a diocesan curia. In 1966, after expropriation of the property, the building housed a kindergarten. In 1997, the curia recovered the building and since 1998 it used it as the seat of a Catholic primary school. After the transfer of the school, the townhouse was empty until it was leased by the bank and started to be used as the seat of a branch in 2001. At that time, the building also underwent complete renovation combined with interior adaptation, and conservation and restoration work. The outbuilding, which was originally a two-storey single-bay building with a mono-pitched roof, also underwent full-scale renovation and extension.

Description

The building is located in the present city centre, at the beginning of the main street of the city (Sienkiewicza Street), at its junction with Św. Leonarda Street. To the west, the main building is adjoined by the altered outbuilding, and further on the built-up area of the frontage of the street starts. The eastern part of the plot is occupied by a green square and car park (probably the former garden part). To the north, the building adjoins the built-up area of Św. Leonarda Street. The style of the townhouse is reminiscent of eclecticism. The main building is erected on a plan resembling the shape of a rectangle, features a two-bay layout of rooms and a separate staircase. It has two storeys and a basement underneath some of its sections, and is covered with a gable roof with a hip end. The extended and altered outbuilding is a two-storey structure characterised by modern architecture. The foundation and basement walls are made of crushed rock gravel, and the structural walls of the ground floor, first floor and chimneys are made of ceramic brick on the limestone mortar. The basement features segmental vaults made of ceramic brick on the limestone mortar; the ground floor and first floor are covered with prefabricated reinforced concrete ceilings on steel beams. The wooden roof truss features a queen post structure and is clad with galvanized sheet metal. The façade of the main building is five-axial, with two avant-corps on the sides, with the face made of yellow-brown clinker brick and plinth of local sandstone. The façade is decorated with a string course and pronounced crowning cornice. The outermost axis in the western avant-corps is pierced by the main entrance with a stylish lavishly profiled double-leaf door with a transom light; the central window on the first floor is fitted with a balcony with a steel and cast iron balustrade. The eastern façade is simple, plastered, decorated with a cornice, and pierced by an entrance to the bank. The interior of the main building has retained the basic original layout of rooms, including the old staircase with stone steps, ceramic floor and decorative balustrade; some rooms are covered with stucco ceilings (crown mouldings and rosettes). The wooden window and door joinery is partly original and renovation and partly new and made according to old pattern.

The building is open to the public from the outside; the interior is open during the opening hours of the bank.
