The building features the original architectural form and a fully preserved half-timbered structure of the walls.

History

The house was built probably in the second half of the 18th century on the site formerly occupied by a medieval inn for sailors and merchants called “Meyenschles Hotel”. The date of construction of the building has been established based on the two-storey body with a mansard roof, type and method of working the wooden parts of the half-timbered walls and roof truss, and barrel vaults in the basement. In the second half of the 19th century, the building was extended to the north and the back walls were modified. Before World War II, the building was owned by the Hildenbrandt family of merchants. At that time, it served as a residential building and housed a shop. After 1945, the building was taken over by the State Treasury and converted into municipal flats. Between 1969 and 1971, it was renovated and revalorised by the Historical Monument Restoration Workshops to be used as a hotel and restaurant. Since 1995, it has been a private property and has served as a hotel and “Pod Muzami” restaurant.

Description

The structure is located in the centre of the old town, cornerwise, at the intersection of Gryfitów and Rybacka Street, in a densely built-up area of a frontage. The building is characterised by its uniform architectural form (a type of a small tenement house) and the original half-timbered façade décor. The house was built on a rectangular floor plan approximating the shape of the letter “L” and measures 13.3 - 17.7 m by 10.4 - 7.8 m; its front faces the south-west; it has three entrances. The building consists of two bodies, two storeys with a usable attic, and a basement, and is covered with two mansard roofs (with varying heights) with dormers. The peripheral walls of the southern sections feature a timber-framed structure with brick infills of the spaces between the transoms; the walls are plastered and whitewashed, and the framework is blacked. The wooden framework is composed of a dense layout of columns combined together with two levels of transoms on each storey and layout of ground plates and top plates; the western wall is reinforced by braces. The walls of the northern part and back walls of the building are built of ceramic bricks, plastered, and whitewashed. All walls are set on a tall plinth of bricks. The ceilings are wooden, with a beam structure featuring an additional layer of boards fixed to the lateral surface of the ceilings beams; the basement has a ceramic barrel vault. The purlin roof truss is made of wood and reinforced by diagonal queen post supports. The roof is clad with ceramic S-shaped beaver tail tiles. The façades feature the original layout and regular axial partitions, accentuated by the drawing of a black and white truss of the half-timbered walls and window casings and cornices within the in the stone part of the structure. The southern façade has 6 axes, while the western façade has 7 axes; the façades feature a half-timbered and masonry structure. The front façade includes reconstructed wooden windows and doors with woodcarvings. The interior was rebuilt and is arranged in a two- and three-bay layout; the restaurant room features exposed ceiling beams and the framework of half-timbered walls.

Private property. The structure can be viewed from the outside. The interior is open to visitors during the opening hours of the restaurant.
