The complex is a high-class architectural and landscape composition, with preserved style features of an English park. The manor house building’s architectural décor and design projects are unique among residential buildings in the region of Wadowice.

History

Jaszczurowa is a locality chartered in the 14th century. From the Middle Ages until mid-19th century, it was a village owned by noblemen. The first references to the manor house originate from the early 17th century. At that time, Jaszczurowa was owned by the Palczowski family, then the Witkowski and Wilkoński families, which in the end of the 18th century and in the 1st quarter of the 19th century conducted dynamic business activities and considerably extended the manor farm. The classical residential outbuilding was created then. The prosperous estate was extended in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century by the Pisarzewski family. After them, Jaszczurowa was taken over by the Knesek family Between 1882 and 1945, the estate was owned by the Thetschel family. In the end of the 19th century, Franciszek Tetschel initiated the construction of the present manor house, completed around 1907. The eclectic building with Art Nouveau elements was erected according to an individual design by an Italian architect whose name has not been identified so far. After the World War II, the property was nationalised and subdivided into parcels under a decree on agricultural reform of 1944. Between 1952 and 2004, the manor house was a seat of a State Orphanage. The outbuilding, which was an upward extension added in the 1920s, there was a guest house. Currently, it houses residential units. The manor farm utility buildings and manor house land were used by the local Agricultural Production Cooperative in its activities. The manor farm structures were dismantled in connection with the construction of the “Świnna Poręba” water reservoir on the river Skawa. The construction was started only in 1986 and it has not been completed until today (2014). The manor house complex in Jaszczurowa is situated on the edge of the reservoir. In the 1980s, renovation and adaptation works were carried out in the residential buildings: minor works in the manor house building, and substantive works in the outbuilding. In 2007, heirs of the Tetschel family regained the rights to the estate. Currently, the manor house is undergoing a full-scale renovation.

Description

The manor house and park complex is located near the border of Jaszczurowa and Mucharz. The conservation policy covers the manor house building, residential outbuilding, and park with the banks of the stream Jaszczurówka at the section within the borders of the complex. The manor house is made of brick and plastered, covered with a Mansard roof with dormers and a cupola roof topping the tower. It was built on a polygonal floor plan, with a rectangular body, a number of avant-corps, and a three-bay interior layout. The building has four storeys and its shape is proportionally designed. In the front façade on the side of porte-cochère, there is a porch in the central section, with a terrace on the first floor, glazed at a later time. Over the terrace, there is a neo-Baroque, lavishly profiled gable with oeil-de-boeuf in the central field, framed with garlands. Window and door openings are framed with full-arch lintels. The façade of the avant-corps from the south is decorated with a cartouche with a monogram shaped as interlaced letters “FHT” (probably Franciszek, Helena, Thetschel). Inside the manor house, part of the original fittings have been preserved, among other things the metal staircase balustrade, window and door joinery, wooden staircase leading to the loft, and a beautiful Art Nouveau stained glass window. The residential outbuilding is made of brick and stone, and plastered. The building is of a wide-front type, with three storeys, covered with multi-pitched roofs, constructed on an elongated rectangle floor plan, with two bays, central and corner avant-corps, topped with a triangular gable with an oculus in the tympanum. In the avant-corps there are staircases, arcades and loggias with spindled balustrades. Inside the outbuilding, part of the original door and window joinery as well as metal decorative balustrade from the 1920s have survived. The park of English type, with an area of approx. 6 ha, was created probably in the early 19th century. In the inter-war period, it was wooded by specimens, between 50 to 300 years old, of 25 species of deciduous trees and 10 species of coniferous trees. They included mainly ashes, oaks, small-leaved limes, chestnut trees, wych elms, white pines. Currently, conservation works are under way in the park, aimed at cleaning the partially surviving, valuable trees.
