Palace complex

palace Jasło

Address
Jasło, Tadeusza Sroczyńskiego 2

Location
woj. podkarpackie, pow. jasielski, gm. Jasło (gm. miejska)

The complex, consisting of a palace and a park, constitutes a work of residential architecture from the mid-19th century, the examples of which are preserved in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship in quite large a number.

It is distinctive for a very picturesque body of the palace.

History

The palace in Gorajowice was constructed in the years 1846-1850 at the initiative of Franciszek Trzecieski to the design of Franciszek Maria Lanci, perhaps in place of an older estate that had existed in Gorajowice from the early 17th century in the form of a brick defensive manor circumscribed by a moat and a rampart, later to be transformed into a Classicist manor house. By efforts of Tadeusz Sroczyński, the Gothic Revival palace in Gorajowice was altered in the years 1896-1901 to the design of Tadeusz Stryjeński. As a result of the renovation, the palace obtained an even more representational character: the interior was altered and decorated with stuccowork, roofs were extended upwards and additional decorative elements were introduced on the façades. The building was plundered during World War I and its magnificent and excellently equipped interiors suffered complete destruction. In the inter-war period the interiors were rebuilt and partially equipped. In 1944 the property was nationalised: the manor farm was taken over by State Agricultural Holding, while the palace housed the Security Office and Poviat Office. In 1961 an internal diseases ward of the hospital in Jasło was located in the palace. Later, a new hospital was built in the park and after the relocation of the hospital ward, the palace became a seat of a school for nurses. Currently, the palace houses a Post-Secondary Medical School.

In the late 18th century the residence in Gorajowice was accompanied by a formal garden located to the west of the main building; it was later transformed into a landscape park.

Description

The palace and park complex is located in the north-eastern part of Jasło, on the southern side of Lwowska Street, which forms a part of the Jasło-Krosno route.

The palace was erected on a floor plan similar to an elongated rectangle with an irregular contour and diversified arrangement of the interior. The palace body is also diversified in terms of space and height. Fragments thereof have one storey, two storeys or more. It features two polygonal towers with crenellation on a machicolation protruding ahead of the multi-hipped, multi-tiered roofs. The building was made of brick and the roof was clad with ceramic tiles on steep lower covers and sheet metal on covers with a lower angle of inclination. Composition of the façades is very lavish. They comprise rectangular windows, some of them terminating at the top in a flattened arch, in stone, profiled surrounds, arranged on different levels and following varied rhythm, as well as bay windows, buttressed avant-corps, pinnacles that crown buttresses and decorative gables, numerous balconies and loggias, triads of basket-handle arches, decorative balustrades, brackets and pronounced cornices.

In the interior, with an irregular arrangement and bearing traces of expansions and reconstructions, embellishments of ceilings, parts of window and door woodwork and ovens have survived.

The palace is circumscribed by a partially preserved park. Its composition, albeit distorted by secondary ownership divisions and felling of trees, allows us to speculate that its design was inspired by English landscape gardens.

At present, the palace houses the Post-Secondary Medical School.
