An early medieval barrow cemetery. The site is a unique feature in the landscape of the Hrubieszów valley.

Location and description

The barrow cemetery is located near the south-western boundary of the town, in an area owned by the State Forest Holding (the Strzelce Forest District) which has traditionally been known as “Dębinka” or “Safarowszczyzna”. The barrow cemetery lies in the vicinity of the monument to the victims of World War II which stands on the right hand side of the road leading from Hrubieszów towards Werbkowice and Zamość.

The cemetery occupies a site with a surface of approximately 0.65 hectares and is made up of eleven earthen mounds of varying size, arranged in an irregular fashion. The mounds, designed on an oval or circular outline, are from 4 to 7 metres in diameter and from 0.20 to 0.50 metres in height. Three of the mounds have survived in a much better condition than the others, reaching up to 0.70 - 0.80 metres in height, while the diameter of the base of the mounds is from 8 to 10 metres. The eastern part of one of the mounds has been partially destroyed in the course of the construction of a pavement leading alongside the local road. The burial mounds are believed to contain the mortal remains of people buried there in the early Middle Ages.

History

The barrow cemetery located in the area which today forms part of the town of Hrubieszów is believed to originate from the early Middle Ages, most likely from the period between the 8th and the 10th century.

The site was originally discovered in the 1990s by Ewa Banasiewicz in the course of a survey conducted for the purpose of ensuring the protection of historical monuments. The site has not been identified during the earlier surface research carried out by Andrzej Kokowski in 1988 in the course of the Archaeological Picture of Poland project. It is now believed that the burial ground originally extended to a much greater area, with its eastern part being irretrievably lost during the construction of the nearby road.

Condition and results of archaeological research

No excavation studies have been carried out on the site. Surface surveys of the site within the framework of the ‘Archaeological Picture of Poland’ project were carried out in 2007 by Wojciech Mazurek. In 2006, Adam Medak and Jóźef Niedźwiedź created a geodesic inventory of the site. In the course of surface research, no moveable artefacts have been discovered on the site of the cemetery.
