Evangelical church in Grodków is an example of neo-Romanesque sacral architecture of the 19th century.

History of the structure

The Evangelical community in Grodków was established in 1773. The first timber-framed church with a brick tower was erected in 1786 through the efforts of the then pastor Rimann and parishioners. After 40 years of use the church was in need of extensive repairs. The issue of renovation dragged on until 1843, when Frederick William IV commissioned Illing, a builder from Nysa, to draw up a plan for a new church. The tender for the construction of the new church was won by carpenter Worbs and master mason Heumann. The existing church was erected in 1846, and the ceremonial consecration by superintendent Dr Hahn took place in 1847. In 1930, the ball was removed from the tower. The warfare did not affect the Evangelical temple so severely (only the roof was replaced and the interior cleaned of the Soviet army’s debris), it was then converted into a Catholic church and until the end of 1946, masses were celebrated there. After the renovation of the parish church in Grodków, Evangelicals returned to their temple. However, due to the constantly decreasing number of faithful, masses were discontinued. From then on, the church ceased to be used. In 1952, when the Protestant population of Volhynian origin came to Grodków and the surrounding state agricultural farms - the church was renovated again. After 1956, when the Evangelicals left Grodków, the church was closed and gradually deteriorated.

Description of the structure

The temple is located in the north-eastern part of the town, within the medieval urban layout. It is located in the eastern frontage of Świerczewskiego Street. It was built of brick, faced with ceramic bricks in a cross pattern, on a foundation of broken stone. The Grodków church is an oriented, three-nave rectangular structure with a semi-circular apse in the east. On the western side, a five-story tower is built into the body of the church, forming a slightly protruding avant-corps in the façade. In its ground floor there is a portal to the main entrance, preceded by steps. Inside, the naves were separated by twelve stone columns, originally carrying wooden galleries. The interior of the temple is illuminated by window openings splayed from the outside and closed with a full arch. The side aisles have larger windows, while the main nave is lit by a pair of smaller bifora windows, separated by granite pillars. Originally the church was covered with saddle roofs, and the side aisles with mono-pitched roofs. Today only the pyramidal cupola of the square tower has been preserved. The raw surface of the exterior walls is complemented by decorations made of bricks, ceramic mouldings and zendrówka brick, which was used to make geometric patterns such as rhombuses and crosses in the apse.

Visitor access: The monument can be viewed from the outside.
