The church is an interesting example of 18th-century ecclesiastical wooden architecture in Greater Poland.

It bears features of Baroque wooden architecture with uniform fittings dating from c. 1780.

History

Gogolewo is a small village upon the Warta River, located 4 km to the north of Książ Wielkopolski. It was mentioned for the first time in documents dating from 1390 as the property of Paszek of the Doliwa coat of arms, referred to as “Gogolewski” or “Rozdrażewski”, a podczaszy (“deputy cup-bearer” — honourary title) of Kalisz and a podkomorzy (“deputy chamber manager” — honorary title of a law court official) and judge of Poznań. The Rozdrażewski family owned the estate of Gogolewo until the mid-17th century. Then, it frequently changed ownership. In 1903, Gogolewo was bought from a Polish owner by Hermann von Kennemann of Klęka, one of the founders of the German Eastern Marches Society (Hakata). In the interwar period, it belonged to Antoni Szyfter and then to Wiesław Kronobis.

The first church in the village, dedicated to St John the Evangelist and St Stanislaus, was built by Paszek Gogolewski in the late 14th century. The church fell into ruin and was restored a number of times. The present church was erected following a fire in 1777. The wooden building, which has survived to this day, was completed two years after the fire, in 1779. In the 19th century, the church was renovated owing to the efforts of local parish-priests; e.g. a small porch having a log structure was built in front of the south entrance. The wood shingles were replaced in 1975; the sill plate was removed and a new foundation slab was installed in 1977; in 2000, the roof truss of the main body and the chancel and the roof over the nave were renovated and a new timber structure was installed.

Description

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is located a certain distance away from the village, on a small hill surrounded by a meander of the Warta River. The church is surrounded with a graveyard containing graves from the 19th century. The building has a post-and-frame structure; the exterior walls are covered with weatherboards. The church is oriented towards the east. It is covered with a two-ridge roof with wood shingles. Above the front part of the nave, there is a turret topped with a high hip roof. The church can be accessed on the west and south sides. The nave has a rectangular floor plan; on its east side, there is a lower and narrower chancel, terminating in a semi-hexagon. Inside, the nave is divided by means of two rows of posts. The music gallery, enclosed with a parapet that bulges out in the centre, is supported by two posts and contains a Rococo pipe organ. On the rood beam, there is a crucifix and the dates “1777” and “1779”.

The uniform, Baroque-Rococo fittings, dating from the period of the construction of the church, deserve particular attention. The Rococo main altar incorporates a crucifix from the 17th century; the side altars feature paintings depicting the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Resurrection of Piotrowin, modelled after a painting by Szymon Czechowicz adorning the main altar of the so-called Fara Poznańska.

In the south-east corner of the church yard, there is a wooden bell tower from the late 18th century, having a roof covered with wood shingles and containing a Late-Gothic bell from 1533.

Legend has it that the church was built on the spot where a cross flowing against the current of the Warta River stopped, which was interpreted as a sign from God. To commemorate that event, the church name was changed to “the Exaltation of the Holy Cross”.

The church may be visited from the outside. Holy Masses: Saturday, 18.00, summer time 18.30; Sunday 9.00, 11.00; weekdays: winter time: Monday 9:00, Tuesday-Saturday 18:00; summer time: Monday 9:00, Tuesday 18:30, Wednesday 18:00, Thursday-Saturday 18:30, holidays on weekdays: 9.00, 16.00.
