utility building Gliwice

Address
Gliwice

Location
woj. śląskie, pow. Gliwice, gm. Gliwice

The building is an example of a 19th-century brick and stone granary formed as a result of the adaptation and extension of a 17th-century residential building.

It is characterised by a well-preserved form and structure of the interior, well-adjusted to its function, as well as clear indications of the gradual modification and extension stages visible on the façades.

History

Built in the 17th century, the granary, originally serving residential functions, was probably the property of a Franciscan monastery at the Church of the Holy Cross in Gliwice. In the 19th century, the contemporary owners — the Welczek family — has the building modified and extended at least twice: the building was extended upwards, the roof structure was replaced, the size and arrangement of the window and door openings was changed, and alterations were made to the interior layout. It was probably then that the building was adapted to serve as a granary, being a component part of a manor complex laid out around a vast yard. In the recent years, the building underwent full-scale renovations, as it was adapted to house a restaurant.

Description

The granary is located in the former village of Stare Gliwice (Old Gliwice), currently being part of the city of Gliwice, within a farmstead, no longer existing, surrounded by manor complex buildings set around a farmyard (no longer existing) situated to the east of Wiejska Street, whose remains are still partially enclosed with a stone wall.

The building is made of stone and (in a smaller part) brick. It has preserved its characteristic, cuboidal form. Built on a rectangular floor plan, the granary has three storeys and cellars and is covered with a gable roof. At the gable level, there are small superstructures which were used to hoist goods. The low rooms of the building are covered with beam ceilings supported by posts.

The historic monument is accessible: it houses a restaurant.
