The parish in Sobieszowice is regarded as one of the oldest in Upper Silesia. The Church of St Bartholomew is a valuable example of a tripartite church characteristic of the Middle Ages and one of the buildings — of which there were not many in the region — which performed not only religious, but also defensive functions.

History

Written records mention the Church of St Bartholomew located in the village of Sobieszowice for the first time in the 13th century. They contain information about a wooden church on stone foundations built by the Templars; the oldest sources give the date of 1232. The current shape of the structure was formed in 1447, when the church underwent major modifications and was extended with a rectangular nave. The next works were carried out in 1592 and then in 1626; the latter were related to damage caused by Dutch troops and consisted in the reconstruction of the walls and the towers. More significant modifications to the interior were made in the mid-19th century — a music gallery was constructed then. In 1837, the contemporary parish-priest commissioned new paintings for the Way of the Cross from a painter called Froemel. Renovations were also carried out in 1910 due to the poor technical condition of the roof. In the following year, the church was turned from a parish church into a filial unit, and it continued to serve funeral functions until the mid-1920s. In 1972, wall and vault paintings, probably dating from the 17th century, were discovered.

Description

The Church of St Bartholomew is located at 36 Toszecka Street, in the Sobieszowice district, in the northern part of Gliwice. The free-standing, oriented church, made of brick, is located on a small hill and enclosed with a stone wall. The Gothic building, having a rectangular floor plan, consists of a square chancel and an elongated rectangular nave. It is characterised by a compact structure; its main part is covered with a gable roof, passing into a multi-pitched roof over the chancel. The front façade features a three-storeyed tower crowned with battlements. The tower, containing a porch, adjoins the church on the west side; on the north side, there is a sacristy with a vestibule containing a side entrance to the church. There are three types of vaults inside the building: a barrel vault in the sacristy, a groin vault in the porch, and a barrel-groin vault with arches in the chancel. The other rooms have flat ceilings, partly made of wood. The window openings have various sizes and are headed by pointed, round, and segmental arches. Inside, there are partially preserved 17th-century wall and ceiling paintings; their most valuable part is the genealogy of Mary the Mother of God, covering the chancel vault. The most notable elements of the Baroque and Neoclassical interior include the 17th-century main altar with sculptures of St Peter and St Paul, a holy water font from the 17th century, a pulpit and a confessional from the 18th century, and Stations of the Cross from the late 18th century and early 19th century.

The building can only be visited from the outside.
