Gliniany

Location

An important historical example of wooden construction originating from the late 16th century, with almost uniform fittings from the 18th century; the most valuable historical building of the Ożarów commune — the oldest and at the same time one featuring the highest artistic value.

History

The church was constructed in 1573. According to Długosz, it was transferred from the nearby Potok, belonging to the Gryf family. On the turn of the 16th and 17th century, Krzysztof Bidziński, the founder of Gliniany, converted it into a Protestant meetinghouse. It was reclaimed by Catholics after twenty years. Bartłomiej Nayrzałek, who ordered renovation of the church and construction of a rectory to it, became the first rector. On the other hand, priest Wiśniewski dates the construction of the church a hundred years later, and writes that it was erected in the late 17th or in the early 18th century. Most probably, however, the church was converted then in Baroque style. Unfortunately, the oldest files are lost, and preserved ones begin in 1767. Nevertheless, a document of 1738, which is the church's consecration deed, was preserved, but it is not known whether it relates to construction of the new or renovation of the old church. The church was solemnly consecrated by bishop Wacłac Sierakowski on 21-09-1738. In 1843, the church was renovated at the initiative of Stanisław Karski. After 1903, a spacious porch was added on the west. The church underwent restoration works in 1980. In years 1995-96, wood shingles were replaced and repaired. In 2000, walls of the church were impregnated. In 2001, the wooden structure of the western part was secured. In 2004, renovation works were carried out. In 2005, the main altar was renovated, and in years 2007-9 — side altars. In 2007, wood shingles underwent maintenance, and works securing the building's foundations were carried out. In 2010, sett around the church was replaced with granite one.

Description

The church is located to the south from the market, on a small hill, and it is surrounded by 19th-century walls of sandstone. It may be accessed by a tarmac road changing into an alley in its ending section. It is an oriented, single-nave, pine church based on a log structure, on a stone foundation, covered from the outside with vertically positioned weatherboards. A nearly square nave leads to a rectangular, polygonal, closed presbytery. From the north, there is a sacristy, from the west — a porch of the same width as the church body, but lower than it. The nave and presbytery are covered with one gable roof resting on a king post truss. The roof is laid with wood shingles. Over the side sections of the nave, there are shed roofs; the northern roof is connected with the shed roof of the sacristy. The porch is covered with a gable roof resting on an attic truss. The roof reaches the crown cornice. Over the church body, there is a late-Baroque steeple in the form of a hexagonal turret, covered with a bulbous roof with a lantern featuring a roof of the same type, topped with a spire with a cross on a globe. External façades are plain, covered with vertical weatherboards with profiled crown cornice. Inside, there is a faux vault with steps in the nave. In the presbytery beyond the main altar, on a structural beam, date 1573 is engraved. The fittings include: main altar of ca. 1730 with a painting of St. Adalbert and sculptures of Faith, Hope, Love, and Justice, along with a tabernacle originating from the same period; side altars from the 1st half of the 18th century with a painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception from the 18th century and a late-Baroque painting of St. Anne. Moreover, there is a late-Baroque ambo here, a choir gallery on a four wooden pillars with a simple parapet, a wooden baptismal font on a stone plinth, and a confessional featuring a painted scene representing the Adoration of the Shepherds from the 18th century.

The historic building is accessible from outside, access to the interior upon consent of the parish priest.
