The granary in Gierałcice combined with an icehouse and corn grinder is one of the building of a grange complex which, together with the palace and landscape park, is a characteristic architectural component of the village.

History

From the end of the 15th century, the village of Gierałcice was owned by the von Stradnitz family. The owners changed over the years as a result of succession, marriage, or sale. From 1499 until the 1st half of the 18th century, the Gierałcice estate was in the possession of the von Studnitz family. In the following years, it was held by the von Naef, von Frankenberg, von Burski, von Poser and von Monst families. In 1902 the von Studnitz family bought the property and remained the owners until 1945. Today, the palace houses a Social Welfare Home. The granary was built in the early 19th century as one of the first buildings of the grange complex.

Description

The grange is located in the north part of the village, by the road to Wołczyn. The buildings encircle a four-sided inner yard. On the north, there are stables and barns; the west row of the buildings contain a barn, workers’ lodgings and a sheepshed; the south frontage is dominated by the palace and landscape park (probably set up in the 18th century and transformed in the 19th and 20th centuries); from the east, there are the railway depot, granary and administrator’s house. There are to access roads to the complex: one at the height of the palace, the other between the administrator’s house and the granary.

The building housing the granary has a rectangular plan. It is built of stone and brick, has two storeys and a two-level loft covered with a double-pitched roof with dormers. In the ground floor level, it is divided into three separate chambers, each of which played a different role and had its own entrance. In the north part, there was the grinder while the icehouse was on the east; the granary, which occupied most of the space, was is in the middle. The upper floors were used for the granary rooms, accessible by the internal and external staircases.

The smoothly plastered façades are articulated with prominent cornices and window openings in the shape of a horizontal rectangle, secured with bars. The 5-axis front façade (west) is articulated in its lower section by the alternating door and window openings. The external axes are encased in shallow bays spanning two levels and arcades topped with a partial arch. On the central axis, there is a shallow projection, and the entrance is flanked by pilasters supporting a triangular pediment. The side façade (south) is a four-storey structure, with the attic level separated with a cornice and window openings of different sizes.

Besides the ground level, the interior of the granary is a single space with rooms covered with beam ceiling on wooden binders. A similar ceiling is seen in the grinder room; only the former icehouse chamber is covered with an arched floor.

The monument is available to visitors from outside.
