The town hall is an example of classical public utility architecture from the 1st half of the 19th century in the Mazovian region.

It has performed its initial function ceaselessly, up to this day.

History

The construction of the brick town hall resulted from a fire of the former seat of the municipal authorities in 1808. The wooden building dated back to the 2nd half of the 17th century and was located in the middle of the Old Market Square.

The new town hall was erected in the years 1824-1827 in the eastern frontage of the market square. Jakub Kubicki might have been its architect, as in the years 1826-1827 he was also working at the reconstruction of a town hall in the nearby Płock. Moreover, the architecture of the seat of the municipal authorities in Gąbin resembles the Ossoliński Palace in Sterdyń in the Sokołów district (Masovian Voivodeship), reconstructed by Kubicki.

Description

The town hall is situated in the centre of the town, in the eastern frontage of the market square, opposite the Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The building has two façades: one faces the Old Market Square, while the second one faces the Warsaw-Płock Voivodship road (currently the Sławoj Składkowski Street).

The building was erected on a rectangular floor plan with the yard in the north, separated from the Market Square by a wall with a gate. The interior has a multi-bay layout, slightly transformed.

The façade on the market side presents an impressive avant-corps with a roof parapet forming a storey. Its central axis is formed by a niche closed with a double archivolt with a window opening and a balcony on the first floor. In the façade from the parish church side there is a deep niche with an entrance on the axis, enclosed from both sides with Ionic columns in the giant order.

The structure is open to the public from the outside; inside it can be viewed during the opening hours of the office.
